Samba American Oak Chunks

Postby oddian » Wed Jan 17, 2024 11:46 am

Hi everyone,

I've recently come across these: https://www.bunnings.com.au/samba-2kg-o ... s_p0288895

They look like american oak chunks, decent size that I could cut down, toast and char and use for aging. Does anyone have an opinion on if they could be used for aging whiskey or perhaps done so themselves?

I figure if they are good for smoking they would probably be good for aging whiskey, Ic oudl just buy some and try it on a small batch of rum to compare it to real american oak but if someone else has an opinion it'd be helpful and potentially save me some money.

Cheers

People have been using them for years but most gave up on them when we started with dominoes .
They are raw oak and will need toasting and charring and sizing

Hello Obian I discovered the hard way the perils of not knowing about end grain.
I have about 10kg of old oak from barrels, sanded back and ready to toast and it has been like that for 2 years lol. I keep going back to 5 star dominoes because i know they work and work well. I just cant bring myself to wait 2 years to see if an experiment worked or not so keep ordering them as I need. I also know the dominoes can be re used but for the unknown factor and the miniscule cost of the dominoes I keep going back to them.
