Thanks BYB
rolloutthebarrel want $350 for a 20l Oak maturing barrel + $20 courier to Sydney
I think I'll be in front if I buy 2 @ 90 from the US + $140 postage = $320
It would be nice to support the locals but two for less than the price of one locally seems hard to beat!

I'd ask plenty of questions of the US suppliers on the quality and condition first. Sometimes barrels ain't barrels. Plus the local guys will do any level of char you want...Up to you, but I bet there is a reason they are so cheap.

You will have heaps of drama with customs because it's wood, I recon they will quarantine it for some time and also that shipping seams to cheap for weight and size of 2 barrels :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Copperhead,
The shipping might be an issue, but barrels for use in 'wine' production are supposed to come through ok, and don't require any import permits, etc (as long as there's no chestnut bark hoops).
http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/in ... 12/58-2012 . I guess it could still get held up in quarantine, unless the documentation is perfect.

I called in and had a chat to this guy. He showed me around and his products (noticed his site doesn't show sizes larger than 50ltrs but certainly they have them and as I recall 100 ltrs was about $20 more than a 50 ltr one.

I am wondering if a brass tap on barrels is taboo like some say brass is taboo on a still,
After recently looking around for an oak barrel I have noticed that a brass tap is very common even on whiskey ageing barrels.
Could someone please confirm my suspicions

Most here will say preferably not. Up to you ultimately. Ask for a stainless or timber tap. They might oblige.

I realise that it's just strange that there are so many options for brass taps if they are not safe and a health issue

I think it mentions it on the site also has a link to videos he did for the ABC.
I had a chat with him about toasting and char and yeah he does a range or can do them to order.
I don't want to dig up bones on the brass issue as there are a dozen threads on it already. Let's just say its a personal thing. Plastic taps no friggen way but brass well personally I would loose sleep
