Oak Trees and there names

Postby DrunkASAskunk » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:06 pm

I have been doing some google serching to see what oak tree's are used in the aging and flavoring of wine's and spirits. So far i have come up with.

Quercus alba
white oak

Quercus robur
Known as English oak or French oak

Quercus petraea
Known as sessile oak, Cornish oak or Durmast oak.

I am trying to fined out all the diffrent types of wood that is used for adding diffrent flavors and coulors to our booze. So if you know of a few diffrent types of wood that is being used and know the name of the tree please add its name to the list thanks for helpping. But befor you do add the name please fined out what the latine name is so we know what its real name is.

Ive noticed that certain drinks are "filtered" before aging in barrels

eg.

Bundy Red , Firstly there is chill filtration, which removes most of the impurities. Next, we have an activated carbon filter - which helps to create some of the smoothness. Finally, the rum is sent through the unique Red Gum filter.

Jack Daniels - has maple wood charred and the bourbon is "filtered" prior

more research ! :laughing-rolling:

Chestnut is used for flavoring and short term aging but is to porous for long aging in raw wood barrels , I did hear of ppl waxing these barrles but of cause then they aren't really aging anymore are they ;-)
