Brass taps on oak barrels

Thanks for the advice. I guess as I am just starting out I am a bit over cautious. Just until I have plenty of knowledge and experience under my belt.

I used a wooden tap on an african negro a few weeks back, I can tell you it had serious health impacts on him and I believe he's going to be suffering for quite some time.... guess it all depends on the tap really

yes remember that post...geez

wondering if with the benefit of hindsight you would prefer stainless steel next time to assist the nice young fellow with his outlook? :laughing-rolling:

wonder what a FSD column at speed would feel like? :laughing-rolling:

I would like to add one thing while ya on the hunt for barrels. I got given one barrel that had a black plastic tap. Luckily the tap thread was just about the same size as your average cork so I cut a short HBS cork in half put it in the freezer then got it out and drilled a 1/2 inch hole though. I put the cork in the tap hole and screwed a small wooden keg tap in. You can buy these from the HBS for jack all , I think that small one was something like 6 bucks . So bottom line is if you are at all worried about the tap you won't go broke replacing it with a wooden one and if you come across a plastic one I reckon I would :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That's an awesome idea crow. Thanks or that. I have a couple of ceramic jugs at home and they have plastic taps in them. I have been trying to think of what I could replace them with. Guess I will be going to my local HBS for some wood taps and corks. :D
