Blended Scotch

Postby Bigmadz » Thu Jul 25, 2013 9:38 pm

Forgive me if its already covered, but I can't seem to find any answers.

I'm wanting to make a blended scotch whiskey imitation with a weetbix wash. Should I be using untoasted oak for soaking? I don't want my end product to be too sweet or smokey

Thanks

If I were you mate, just put a small amount of toasted oak in... you can always add more later. ;-)

If your chasing that peated smoke flavour typical of scotches you could try adding a few drips of peatreek to it and use light or untoasted oak. I haven't tried it but here's how some ppl make it
Peetreak
Add 2 cups Peat Moss to a tin container with lid.
Gently heat on BBQ, turning or shaking frequently, for 1 hour. It will smoke a little bit.
Let cool completely before adding 2 cups high ABV alcohol.
Filter through mesh strainer, then cheesecloth, then a few time through coffee filters.

I double distilled the WBAB through a pot still but it came out like a Bourbon. I initially soaked 3.5lt at %65 on 4 toasted dominoes, colour was fantastic but the product wasn't what I wanted, too sweet for me.

I have soaked neutral on the dominoes and added experimented with Whiskey Profiles, which turned out ok, but I'd rather pull the wash flavour through pot still and stay away from HBS gear.

I'm now in the process of stripping a Wheat Germ wash, see how this turns out.

Are you using American or French oak?

these oak stave and dominoes how long do they last, I use the chips in the little paper bags from the HBS and I'm lucky to get two soaks out of them.
