Barrel cost

Postby AussieAndy » Tue Oct 15, 2013 6:11 pm

So.....

I'm thinking about buying a barrel to break up and use for ageing, what would you pay for a used wine barrel?

Or am I better off buying some dominoes somewhere, if so where would I get them from around brissy, western side preferably.

Thanks guys

Give it a toast to your liking ether in the oven or BBQ or with a propane torch then chuck it on your booze. Couldn't be simpler. Some people scrape it back to get to fresh timber but i have never bothered.

Yeah, I have seen them not far from me for $160 for a barrel, thought that was a good price. My next question I guess is it worth the effort or should I just buy dominoes done?

Never used dominoes so can't comment on them. But 1 barrel will probably see you through to your grave....good value for money

Get some American Oak Dominoes then, most wine barrels you will find will be French oak and won't really give you what you want.

The dominoes that are already done (toasted) like the last group buy are really good for bourbon :handgestures-thumbupleft:

true that Sam and Liv. French oak doesn't get quite the right taste for bourbon IMO. But it is fuckin delicious in rum

Sweet, that's the info I wanted. Will get dominoes then, anyone know where to get them from for a decent price in Brisbane or online, not too concerned with having to buy a minimum amount as I figure they don't go off.

So,does that mean I will need French oak for rum then??

If I can get interest close to 20kg, I'll put in an order. Indicative pricing would be $15/Kg plus postage to you.

That's a lot of oak! :wtf:
