Dunno mate,
But the fact that they're so cheap rings alarm bells ( but I'm a paranoid prick) ;-)

possibly treated with pesticides, not sure what customs does to raw timbers on entry to Australia but when I freight anything in timber they want all sorts declarations re treatment of raw timbers..

I cant really say as my import broker takes care of all that ;-)

I've been watching this guy for a while http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/artscraftsof ... ksid=p3686 Simmiler sort of thing, place and price. I emailed the government about it got this reply

Thank you for providing that additional information. The current import conditions for oak barrels and staves can be found on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Biosecurity website on the Import Conditions Database (ICON). Just click on the link http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon and search ICON for ‘Oak Barrels’ to find out more.

Oak barrels include new and used barrels, staves, tanks and vats that are used for alcohol production only.

Consignments of oak barrels (including the headboards and staves) do not require and import permit. Your consignments of oak barrels used for alcohol production will require an inspection on arrival into Australia.

Items arriving through an sea/air freight will be inspected by the DAFF Biosecurity officers. There can be an inspection fee of $90 for the first 30 minutes and an additional $45 for every 15 minutes thereafter. You may also incur processing fees and documentation assessment fees. For a list of full fees and charges please refer to the DAFF Biosecurity website Fees and Charges. Some further information regarding air courier fees can also be found on the DAFF Biosecurity website.

If you require further information or assistance to complete this application please contact the Timber and Timber Products National Co-ordination Centre by telephone on 03 8318 6929, by fax on 03 8318 6777 or via email, timber.imports@daff.gov.au

Wasn't super encouraged with that. Guy who sells em recons he shis lots to oz no worries. As I am ,at least for the moment, still using a very small still it hasn't been an issue; soon I'll really want a barrel. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

P.S Told the gov I wanted to make wine. :laughing-rolling:

I doubt a 10L barrel coming through the post will catch the attention of customs. Im sure they are more worried about the big shipments of full size barrels.

As for the barrels themselves nothing ever dodgy has come out of mexico

There are many many coopers in Oz, have you checked on pricing around the country? Especially if it was going to be a bulk order I am sure you could find someone with a reasonable price. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

This sounds like a good idea. I'm after 1 or 2 25lt barrels maybe we could get a group buy deal going with a local cooper. :D

This company seems to have pretty good reviews on their Facebook page.

http://www.barrelsonline.com/Default.aspx

I emailed them regarding postage and this is their response.

Yes we do ship to Australia and depending on postal code shipping for one 10L is around $54 USD and shipping for one 20L is around $89

i had a bit of a chat with customs one day about how they decide what wood can come in and what wood cant. bascally they said its smooth and clean wood that looks healthy, then they let it through. if there r holes where bugs my live then they radiate it [for a bucket of $$]

if this is for the business let them know that u want to buy a few. u should be able to get a far better wholesale price, and postage would decrease.
