Hungarian Oak

Postby brudda » Thu Dec 12, 2013 10:22 pm

Anyone dealt much with Hungarian Oak?

I've heard it gives a bit of a spicier flavour, especially in comparison to French.

Seems like it would be good for a rum, especially a spiced rum!

Was searching around and came across these barrels on ebay from an overseas buyer, direct from Hungary, postage takes them up to $239??

Does anyone do hungarian oak dominoes/sticks/cubes in Aus?

Jesus I can't keep up; never heard of it in distilling circles.

Next it'll be Alaskan oak :wtf:

I have a 50 ltr Italian oak barrel that my rum is kegged in. I think its the same or similar oak and yes it has some spicy notes to it, if you think the price is fair get it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi brudda,

Did you end getting one of these?

I'd be interested in hearing if this is much different to French oak flavour wise.

G'Day Hava,

I did indeed get a 15L Hungarian Oak. Great craftsmanship, great smells from it. Filled it up with water until I had some rum to go, don't get too much time for distilling, so far I've got 2L 65% rum in there, I've had a few tastes and it's very different, less vanilla flavours then french oak and a stronger taste with some hints of spice, I'm very impressed and look forward to further aging.

Need to get some more in there, I've got 2x 40L rum washes and a new copper bubbler for that purpose!
