Stainless 44 for aging

Postby ekul » Wed Feb 26, 2014 2:26 pm

I can get acheap stainless 44 gallon drum from somwhere, would there be any issue aging in it? Me and a mate want to fill a wine barrel and put it at his folks farmshed for 10 or so years to age, but it takes so long to get that much. We figure if we each just fill it up slowly when we have a bit of excess we'll eventually get the 200L required to fill a wine barrel. Might take a year or two to fill but we'll be waiting 10 years for it to age anyway so we got plenty of time.

Any issues with rum sitting in those commercial stainless 44s for a year?

First, where are you located and where are you getting cheap 44 stainless drums :scared-eek:

Second, stainless is one of the best things to store in as long as it's clean,

Thirdly, you could make a nice 200l boiler out of one

in qld from a mate. Unsure whats been stored in them yet though. I think a 200L boiler would be too big for me, i wouldnt have the power to support it (can only run 2x2400w elements in my house if noone uses the toaster, microwave or tv). PLus my 80L boiler is pretty sweet.

So the seams won't leak or anything? This is very good news :)

Howdy,

Before you start investing in SS for long term storage you might want to read this one from the Doc...

+1... I'd be slapping my still on top of the 44, finding 4x 50L kegs to hold the spirit, and starting a 50L whiskey wash... Use the backset and lees to start a 200L wash... Then using the backset and lees to start a 1000L wash. You'll have that barrel filled in no time!

See, I'd go with ekul and be using the SS drum to store my spirit until I had enough to fill a wine barrel
you can always aerate it later ;-)
