just take your time if you do use a router always leave yourself with a bit to play with as its easier to take more off then add it on :))
I have never done any barrels but am a carpenter and do all insurance work and some times the mills dont have the machine profiles of really old stuff and they can get them made but its $250 for the machine bit then a rate to mill it plus the timber so for a 3m length we have to make it on site as they wont pay $500 for a 3m bit of timber 8-} . Usually use a router, planer (electric and hand ones), chisel and sand paper to do it depending on whats needed but as I say best to take out less and sand or plane it out then to much and start over :handgestures-thumbupleft:
