It's a 10L barrel.
Yes once the hoops are removed, the staves "pop open". The head piece came out easy.
Biggest issue about reassembly is how well I can woodwork the replacement.
Tapping down the hoops will lock the head pieces and staves together and hopefully no leaks.
That's the theory.

Thanks Blues.

Those charr patterns are interesting...like they masked the end of the stave's with a round thing .

Hows the wood sourcing going ?.....interesting that you can buy american oak at your timber yard....might be a relatively cheap source of oak

I found this the hardest part, had to clamp the barrel with a big hose clamp then put the hoop on, mine was a much smaller barrel so be interesting to see how yours goes, good luck :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Tapped the chime ring back on.
Unsure how I'll go making that curved bezel, tongue shape to fit back into the croze nicely.
One thing I did find, upon reassembly, use a flour dough to fill the croze before fitting the head.

OK so I picked up my American oak timber from Monaro Timber in Queanbeyan
Got 1 metre so I can have more than one go at making/shaping the replacement head piece if needed.
Was $13.50 for the wood and I got it nicely dressed which was another $15

How did this end up going, I'm guessing not so good as the thread seems to have died

Haven't been able to get to it yet, been away the last few weekends.
Have to shape the male end of the wood of the head piece.
Not quite sure how to do this. Wood files/bastard or router are my thoughts.

If you are in the A.C.T, thre is a Cooper not far from you called Jason Nelson
He works at Shepards Run in Wamboin NSW.
I have no idea how muh he might want to fix it, but I think he would be he closest Cooper to you,
Hope that helps. Barrels aren't cheep.

just take your time if you do use a router always leave yourself with a bit to play with as its easier to take more off then add it on :))

I have never done any barrels but am a carpenter and do all insurance work and some times the mills dont have the machine profiles of really old stuff and they can get them made but its $250 for the machine bit then a rate to mill it plus the timber so for a 3m length we have to make it on site as they wont pay $500 for a 3m bit of timber 8-} . Usually use a router, planer (electric and hand ones), chisel and sand paper to do it depending on whats needed but as I say best to take out less and sand or plane it out then to much and start over :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Got around to making the head piece and fitted.
ATM not a real neat fit and is leaking water between the head pieces.
Unsure if wood swell will seal it, think I'll be making adjustments.

If it doesnt seal up, try wedging some shavings in there.... by that I mean the nice curly shavings from a hand plane :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ok I messed up with the first effort.
Took too much off and figured that this middle head
piece is actually wedge shaped. Second effort seems to be sealed up water tight. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Not a pretty job, but functional.
Waiting for delivery of a tap for it and got a cork for the fill hole. Happy days.

I used a $10 ball shaped rasp from bunnings attached to power drill to shape the male end.
