Lets assume i have 5l at 65% sitting on oak chips. '

When i want to add distilled water to bring it down to 40% what is the formula to work it out :)

There is a formula, and a calculator, but I just sit my alcometer in the jar and slowly add water until the desired ABV :)

Forth one down the Dilution Calculator is what you're after.

C2H6O, thanks.

Missed that handy little tool.

Seems that i am also not putting enough sugar into my washes and this might be the cause of low yields.

Interesting.

Do you have a smartphone Ian?

There's an app called 'Distiller's Toolbox'. It's free and does exactly that...

It's not overly that hard to work out if you're half inclined with basic math...

5L @ 65% = 3.25L ethanol / 1.75L water

Since you're not adding any more ethanol, you want to know of what volume will 3.25L of ethanol equal 40%, you get me?

So, 3.25/0.4 = 8.125L

With your 3.25L, you would need 4.875L of water...seeing as you already have 1.75L in there, you would need to add 3.125L of water to bring the abv to 40% :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I like the app idea :D

I usually write all these little formulas down but when i want them their nowhere to be found:)

Simple way is just
start vol * current % / required %
in your case
5 * 65 / 40
new final vol = 8.125

Definitely right...I was just trying to break it down in stages so everyone could understand what was going on :-D

Flamehawk..its Ok , someone has to do it .

But it is sad really.....if our teachers had explained back in year 6 the relevants of this , we may have rembered it ....just maths teachers are shit at giving real world examples of all the great stuff they can offer us .

Thanks Brendan..thats the way I do it too.....just can't believe how hard it was to work out the first time I tried it ...my maths teacher would have been ashamed

+1 for Distillers toolbox. So easy. Just remember it is all in proof not ABV. So simply double your abv to get proof values.

Moonshine (app) works nicely and is simple enough for me to use.

Word on the street has it you should add you alcohol to the water rather than the other way around. :-B
Not sure how it changes much but is supposed to prevent hazing. :teasing-blah:
