10L Barrel Oak or not??

Postby Kaneriley227 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 4:00 pm

hey guys, was given this barrel a few yrs ago, and was wondering if it was oak? it doesnt have any holes in (except for the one i just drilled in it) by the looks of the edge on the front its not charred at all, how can i tell if it s the real deal or is just a prop barrel??
hopefully some one can give me a idea...

is it varnished? looks to be pretty tight with nothing stored in it and if it was made to hold something would think a hole would be there. Looks a bit sus to me but I never had a barrel so cant say

If it was mine, I'd tap the chime ring off and open it up, only way to tell.
You cannot tell if inside is charred just by looking at the head.

You could drill a bit bigger hole for a look see.

Does it smell like it has stored anything?

Na it hasn't been varnished, nothing has ever been stored in it. Might have a go at opening it up tomorrow.

DON'T USE IT!!!
you dont know what they have made it from and the fact that they have used glue is a big giveaway.... Its just a prop. ;-)
Its very hard to tell by the pics but it looks like it could be made from Meranti or Nyatoh or a similar tropical timber :handgestures-thumbdown:

cheers for that kimbo :text-thankyoublue:

i had a hunch it wasnt a oak barrel, the old man has a 200 lt one here full of port and it was alot harder wood than the one in the photos.
cheers again.

put her back together and leave as an ornament.. maybe put a tap on it for laughs but as kimbo said - No Go!

the glue could dissolve into the alcohol and have some nasty tastes and chemicals in it.

better left as an ornament
