Canadian Maple

Postby pulsetech » Mon May 12, 2014 9:05 pm

Has anyone tried Canadian Maple in their whiskey or Rums ? I have a bunch of it and it smells so good. Its already in 15mm x 20mm x 900mm long pieces so cutting it up for jars or bottles should not be a hassle. I don't have any product to try it in just yet

Can't really help in particular but just make sure you are certain what type of oak you have and research to make sure it is safe (very generic but needs to be stated) :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Its not Oak its maple

I just read on Google that all Canadian Whiskey is stored in Maple Barrels
Must be ok I guess

I know the history of this particular wood as it was used for a very specific purpose.
we no longer use it so I have a stash. Looks like I need to read up on toasting it now

Yeah thats what I was thinking Bluess57.

I'd look long and hard into the type of wood going in.. maple may be good but I would practice due diligence here :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Maple's fine it what I use to pack 2"/50mm x400mm filter for Rye's.

It's not cheap but is anything worth while?

So I have found out that the maple I have is Known as Sugar Maple. Its the same maple that Jack Daniels uses (as Charcoal) to filter there old Number 7
I will be trying this out Toasted and chared in small batches to see how it goes. The same run will also be aged on toasted oak

I see this timber is use a fair bit in flooring. Would it be any good for use with spirit flavouring and aging? I kinda figure it's to processed but I thought I'd ask seeing as I know nothing about timber.

If not could some nice person please point me in the right direction for sourcing small amounts of this timbre for said purpose .

Before you put any timber in your spirit, you want to be absolutely certain that the timber itself is safe, and that it hasn't been treated with anything that will make it unsafe...

Probably better off sticking to known timbers to start.

Canadian Maple for flooring in Aussie? Not that I know of.... There are plenty of timbers called maple in Aussie, QLD maple, Pacific Maple etc. I wouldn't be using them in your spirits they are not the same timber

I was more referring to Entity's post, pulsetech...

Slightly off topic, but wine barrels that have been cut up and sold to use as plant pots may be treated/varnished to weatherproof them, rendering them dangerous for what we want... The same could be said for any timber.

I'll stick to toasted & charred American Oak dominoes :D

Upon discovering this thread i proceeded to get my google on and there were several different flooring companies listing sugar/rock maple, Acer saccharum , as a flooring product they carry. Only looked at aussie domain sites. Apparently it's also popular for use in drum sticks and skateboard decks as well.

But yeah figured it would be treated in some way considering its intended use.

Considering custom laws any wood brought into the country would have to be treated so i'd be looking for a locally grown source Ithink .

Its also used in bowling lanes. All imported timbers are fumigated these days.
The stuff I have was imported many many years ago when customs were not so strict

Sugar Maple is grown here, just not for the syrup (need cold winters to get the sugary sap)
Apparently it's starting to be grown in Northern NSW for cheap fast growing furniture wood

Your sugar maple will be just fine and dandy to use and providing you are happy with the flavour it imparts more joy to you. you may want to consider doing one maple and one half oak have maple for comparson, you may find the blended one will be closer to JD or CC depending on the base whiskey used :-B
