All my eggs in one basket

Postby wiifm » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:34 pm

Finally, over the past 9 or 10 months, I've accumulated enough BWKO to fill the 50 litre oak keg I got for Christmas. :happy-partydance:

On Tuesday night, after following the manufacturer instructions of putting a couple of kettles full of boiling water in the keg to swell the ends, my distilling assistant and I diluted down to 62.5% and filled the keg.

All seemed to be going well until we tried to move the keg. Firstly, it was heavy and secondly it was LEAKING! :scared-eek: Managed to roll it around so that the worst leak was above the liquid level, then let the bourbon soak in for a couple of days by rotating the keg. It has pretty much stopped leaking this afternoon.

You can see the stains from the leak on the left hand side of the photo.

As you can imagine, not much has changed over a couple of days.

Here is a comparison with the same stuff I have had on oak Domino's for about 6 weeks.

I'll post more photos to document the changes.

I guess your lucky it stopped leaking 8-}
I think your supposed to completely fill with water until it stops leaking and then fill with spirit
My last one wouldn't stop so I had to seal it up with some candle wax which did the job

BO = BWKO - Bloody phone :angry-banghead:

I can't remember where I saw or heard it, but I had it in my head not to soak the whole thing in water. It was panic stations for a minute or so, but in the end I probably only lost a litre and I know where I can get more.

Love granddad's saying. I can imagine what he says about mixing with coke, but then it's only fucking one good drink :teasing-tease:

Fixed the typo for ya, wiifm :) was wondering why anyone would collect 50L of BO :laughing-rolling:

Apparently my old man is getting me a 20L barrel for Father's Day... I think I might fill it with rum, though.

Yes this one is from Roll Out The Barrel. When I spoke to them about what I wanted, they were aware of aussiedistiller.com.au :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Will a 50L take that long Sam, I thought maybe being a smaller barrel it would oak quicker.
Only asking cause I'm in the process of trying to accumulate enough UJ Whitedog to fill one of those kegs.
I haven't bought it yet but but the time is getting closer. Roll out the Barrel isn't to far from me to drive to pick one up.

i filled a 6l uncharred barrel with macwiskey and 6 months was the sweet spot :handgestures-thumbupleft:
it tasted like an irish when earlier taste test were conducted but at six months it was almost like bourbon :dance:

Every one loved it at the wabs xmas party at mac's when it was more like an Irish
But I prefered it when another 4 months older an more like bourbon
The barrel made a better product than the staves but was slower and the angels certainly got there share ;-)

I'd probably take samples month by month, or you'll have none left by the time you get to 2 years haha
