Aerating Rum

Postby CH3CH2OH » Thu Jul 17, 2014 6:59 am

I've done a lot of reading on aerating and the benefits it has on whisky. I really want to give it a try but has anyone had any positive experience doing it with rum?

What is the consensus on rum and aeration?
Does it work as well for rum as it does for whisky?
Are people aerating rum before oak is added or while it is being oaked?

Thanks

My understanding of the aerating process is it replicates the air exchange spirits experience in a barrel or other vessel, only faster. So by that reasoning any aged spirit should benefit.
I could be wrong, and if I am hope someone tells me as I have rum, brandy and whisky on the bubbler.

:text-+1:

Where it has been used, it's done while the product is on oak and usually after it has for, say for a few months, to speed up the rounding process towards the end...can't smooth flavours that aren't there, and something like 70% of the flavour comes from the oak/barrel.

Where it has been done commercially, it's often been 0.5 and 0.2 micron size stones, where the typical home aeration stone is a bit larger :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I do an all molasses rum which benefits a lot from airing it for a week or two before putting it on oak. I'm guessing a bit different to the question asked, but I just let it sit in a demijon with filter wool stopping bugs from getting in.

I guess we're getting mixed up between airing and aerating...I take aerating to mean forcing oxygen into the spirit through micron air stones...

All spirit benefits from airing, while I would think aeration would be of little benefit without oak contact for the spirit...

I use the same ones and they produce very fine bubbles, but I recommend placing an inline air filter in your tube before the air stone as they get blocked really easily.

Last summer I went through 3 air stones in one week due to fine dust being blown in from the evaporitive cooling so I installed a filter and that solved the blockage problem. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've read through the aeration thread and many others on several forums. Most of the posts relate to aeration of whiskeys and with good results.

Information is sparse and contradictory when it comes to using the technique for rum. Some say it makes no difference at all, some do it while oaking some dont, some others report good results with rum.

The main reason of my post was to get an idea on peoples successes or failures with respect to aeration of rum.

Thanks guys

I put aeration on my rum yesterday. I'll let you know what the verdict is in week or two.

Do you have a link to the filter you used. Been looking for 1 for a few hours and all I find is check valves
