Charred JD Chips

Postby Whiskyaugogo » Sun Aug 10, 2014 3:56 pm

Hey all,

Scored these American Oak chips from a Copper in QLD. He states that they are from used JD barrels that he has access to from time to time (after the 4 years initial use by the Distillery). He chips and toasts them himself and they fit nicely in the top of a 5lt demi john.

I will give the a run and let you know the outcome as they were quite expensive. Maybe worth approaching for a group buy if good? 8-)

Looks good

What percentage alcohol is the vodka?
Interested to know as some percentages give vastly different flavours

Cheers

Not vodka, it's an all grain Whiskey :violence-stickwhack:

I cut this to about 50% as I like spirits strong :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Whisky , generally speaking its better to oak at around 65%......dilute down to drinking strength after you have oaked.

Sorry SBB, should of explained my experiment better, I currently have 2 bottles maturing with AG whiskey. One is around 60-65% the other 50%. What I am trying to determine or check the difference is does a lower proof take on different flavours and be less prone to evaporate? I also now have 2 American White Oak barrels (5lt) and have filled both the same.

I did have a sample last night and was quite impressed with the 50% over the higher proof. In comparison to the charred dominos, these charred chips have achieved a better flavour and deeper colour in just 3 weeks! Can't wait to have another sample at 6 months :handgestures-thumbupleft:
