The "salvaged, kiln roasted" bit has me wondering how much eucalyptus oil is left in the wood - most likely not enough to be poison us
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptu ... d_toxicity

Gimmickry? there are lots of things being tried and unless you study something over years its hard to say whats going to build up in your body from anything - what we make is poison - its just a matter of "acceptable toxicity" - intrestingly red gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis, isnt on the comercially used list for eucalypt oil extraction, that may be due to rarity though

I try to minimise my exposure to toxic stuff when making ethanol. Yes ethanol is a carcinegin but theres a billion other ones in day to day life also Eucyluptus oil on other hand will kill you pretty quick I think I will stick to oak. I posted it more as an observation of what craft distilleries will do to stand out and make a buck rather than something to try..I should have been more clear.. stay safe..

I would also doubt that the wine they are putting in it has anywhere near the "stripping" power of some 65% spirit

:handgestures-thumbupleft: hence why we use ex wine barrels with success. Ex spirit barrels depending on previous use with less success..

Red gum might be on the more ok side of things,
Not sure if this is a positive or a negative but Bundy sell a red gum filtered rum, apparently it's smoother than the standard yellow label stuff.
I'm not a Bundy drinker so it was still pretty rough to me, and I thought any smoothness would be from the decrease to 37%ABV.

I would think the red gum filter would be red gum charcoal like JDs do with their maple?

I don't like the idea of any wood that hasn't been proven over a long period of time. So please don't risk your health for the small benefit of your whiskey tasting like a gum tree.

I would also point out that with the boom of craft distilleries don’t think that they all know exactly what they are doing...

I have had an experiment going with Brigalow for the last 18 months, all my research has led me to believe that the wood itself is safe, the leaves and bark contain DMT. The wood itself is denser than Oak and is imparting a wonderful fruity aroma and flavour to the Rum its sitting in, its also giving it a lovely red hue. I have had a couple of small samples over the past 6 months, am probably going to find someone to test it for me once its 2 years old. Hopefully it is safe. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
