Going by $100000 that these blokes have already made to start the project, I think people have already fallen for it!

Looks like they run on the same principle as oak chips... Heaps of end grain exposed, lots of colour and tannins quickly...

I think they may make a small difference in already aged alcohol over the course of a week or 2 but aging from white dog would be a failure.

I'm not expecting it to age the liquor in record time; but for US$50 to get 6 sticks, I'd be happy to experiment to see how the greater surface area would change the aging process.

Or you could trim a domino up with a bandsaw or jigsaw to the same type of design?

Sounds to me like their just re oaking already oaked whiskey, just giving it "their own flavour profile". From what I've read, you're better off minimsing end grain, aren't ya? May aswell just re oak something with hbs chips or just oak it longer :))

I think this is targeted at people who will put one in a bottle of jacks and say " i made that" :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

whats the difference between topshelf and standard? time and oak. This shows the understanding is flawed i mean its very simplistic ingredients malting fermentation distillation etc all contribute to quality looks like a bunch of uni lads trying to make a quick buck

I agree..

It does say right at the top "customise your whisky", so it's just a method of altering the taste of an existing product rather than making from scratch.

I wish I'd thought of it.

It's just a good marketing job. A bit like distilleries making gin by re distilling a commercial ethanol base and passing it off as hand crafted or boutique.

Well watered down that 2nd gen UJ today and put in my 5 litre demijohn and had to cut some American Oak dominos to get then thru the neck. Thought about this thread so for a laugh hacksawed some slots in both 1/2's and whats the bet it won't make jackshits difference to the aging.

It's been 3 days Bryan. 2 days more than the 24 hrs they claim, so did it make a difference??

Bear in mind these guys have been utilising a scientific method and have had their product analysed on high-end equipment. i.e., they didn't just throw a couple of sawed chunks of oak in their booze then two days later sip to compare and declare 'yeah this is better'.

What often separates outfits like Whiskey Elements from backyard stillers is the rigour that goes into testing a process or product. I doubt there are many people here on this forum sending their whitedog off to labs to ensure that it contains enough of the favourable congeners conducive to proper ageing and achieving their intended flavour profile.

1+ cutting slits in dominoes 8-)
