Eastern European oak barrel

Postby Beer Belly » Sun Nov 23, 2014 8:39 pm

I have a barrel from a winery. It was made by "World Cooperage" and is a Medium Toast.
It used to contain either a Cab Sav or Merlot.
I have tried to find out exactly what kind of oak it is but to no avail. Should i cut it up for dominoes ?

It should mate, hopefully it's a nice colour inside and there should be what looks like specks of salt. This is what doc mentioned yesterday in another thread, these are tartrates from the wine apparently. If they are present you can be certain that the barrel hadn't been treated with anything.

I had a barrel very similar that had an awesome colour inside, I will try and dig up a pic if I can. The oak will serve you well cut it into sticks and toast them in alfoil on the barby :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Eastern European normally refers to oak which is the same as the french oak tree but grown in different areas of Europe. Hungary and ex Yugoslavia are some of the main supplies. Hence the term 'Eastern'. Similar to french oak and was used as a substitute over the years.
