Oaking with Gobbler chips - what % ABV

Postby Crispy » Wed Dec 23, 2015 10:34 am

I want to make about 3.5 litres of bourbon and thought I would soak it on gobbler chips for a few weeks - months
I have 1.575 litres of neutral (tpw) @ 95%

So my question is....should I dilute to 60% (2.5 ltr) and soak on 60g of chips, then water down to 40% later?......or water the neutral down to 40% now (3.7 ltr) and soak on the chips?

I remember reading a table somewhere about oaking at different ABV % and what flavour profiles are extracted for each given % but I cant find it again...

Just after a bit of advice here - not sure what the best thing to do is....

Cheers,

Water down to between 62.5 and 65% then oak at around 10g per liter for the chips if intending to leave for a long time, wouldn't go much more as they have a big surface area.

If you are intending on oaking lots check out the dominoes they have minimal end grain :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Wouldn't go much more than a month with hbs chips though, they tend to get a tad gnarly flavor wise after that.
