Spiced Rum flavourings

I've seen letting your rum sit on various spices and the like, but has anyone tried tinctures (not sure if that word fits)

A couple of years ago I put a packet of raisins into a litre of 95% and just forgot about it. Today it is a golden brown syrup, slightly sweet, fantastic raisin nose, burns a hole in your tongue but tastes pretty good. I did a similar thing with some cinnamon sticks a few weeks ago and that is already quite a potent flavour base. I'm about to do the same with some fresh ginger root and some black pepper corns, with the idea of using very small amounts of these to "spice" some rum that has been on oak for some time.

Has anyone else tried this and have any results?

Doesn't look like anyone has. Sounds like a good idea though. Let us know your results :handgestures-thumbupleft:

What advantage do you see making tinctures rather than direct maccerations?

I was thinking it may be easier to flavour to taste this way. I now have Ginger, Raisin, coffee, Black Pepper, Cinnamon and Lime and going to do some vanilla and Nutmeg.

The ability to adjust individual flavour components easier. Also easy to do small amounts to test as opposed to macerating. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

My favourite way to spice rum so far, pugi rum style without the pineapple just a couple of slivers of orange zest and 1-2 cloves per litre and lightly oaked....very nice

I use cardamon in my fig and vanilla vodka. It has an amazing flavour. Havent made any rum yet, but when i do it will be getting the same treatment.

Just blended some rum that had been Oaked in a mini port barrel with my orange zest and clove spiced mix.
Quite tasty
