Gin question -where has the flavour gone

Postby Rolls912 » Mon Feb 26, 2018 10:06 pm

I’ve tried blonde.chap’s gin receipe....
When I taste the gin coming straight off the still it has plenty of flavour.
Let it settle for a couple of weeks, and it tastes smoother but more faint.
Give it a month and it’s week as piss.
Why does the flavour dissipate so significantly? What am I missing here?

That’s no good, what still did you use? Also how was the gin stored?

Depends on the flavour.
Citrus tends to fade quickly.

Gin is typically not something that needs ageing.

And as DUJ asked how did you run it?
Using hearts of hearts of hearts or straight from a wash?

Does it have an orris root in it?

Orris root, apart from adding it's own little piece of the flavour puzzle, acts as a fixative for the other flavours to combat this phenomenon.

Some people are allergic to orris root.
Angelica root is another fixer but with little or no allergy properties.

That's interesting, I did not know that.

Thanks gents.

I follow the receipe to the tee. I have tried others with both roots in it.

Stored in good conditions.

It was a turbo wash (now I use TPW), 1 pot, 1 reflux with basic cut, I reflux with full cutting.

Does the heart or hearts make a difference with longevity or the quality of the product?
