Flavouring Whiskys

Postby Sinerjee » Mon Jul 07, 2014 9:01 pm

Has anyone had much experience adding things like maple and honey to whiskys?
I tried adding some honey to a HBS whisky essence that I made up but the flavour doesnt seem to have come through too much.
I quite like Crown Royal Maple Infused Whisky and Jim Beam Honey so being able to add flavours like these would be awesome if anyone has any ideas.

Cheers

Don't have a lot of experience but I have done a Cornmash with about 1 kg of honey in it. The finished product had no real taste of honey but there was a honey aftertaste albeit faint. I have read that this is one of the most sort after "moonshines" in the US or rather, the most expensive. Might see if can find an actual recipe!

I might be even inclined to use something like http://www.foodieflavours.com/shop/natu ... ing/honey/

I must just need to add more than what I had. It sort of has a slight honey flavour at the end but not as much as I'd like.

Is there any reason you would use this instead?

Im thinking it may be easier to use in the sense that a few drops may be all thats needed, mix to drinking strength, flavour to taste. But bt is right.. be careful, food safe aint necessarily spirit safe :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I just pulled out a year old litre bottle Bwko I had put 3.5 teaspoons in it.
Just tasted it and only very slight notes of honey it is not apparent up front and slightly shows up at the back of the tongue after a while.

So I would double it? Next time.

I also noted there is a sediment settled at the bottom of the bottle!

It will depend a lot on your quality of honey I would try to get it from a beekeeper at least you know it will be pure!
