3/4 tri clamp union

Postby Astro » Thu Mar 29, 2018 7:12 pm

After a bit of help with my pot and lieberg, its joined by thread
29595566_10156290940354028_5075717497422473230_n.jpg

And im not happy with the angle it tightens up at, so im wanting to remove the threaded ends and replace with 3/4 copper ferrule and use a clamp.

problem is i cant find 3/4 copper ferrules, anyone know where to obtain some. 5 star have what i want in SS but unsure if i can join it to copper? :angry-banghead:

You can join a stainless ferrule to copper, look in the “tips from the workbench “ section. Will possibly be safer than that brass union.

Or ya could use a 1/2inch or 3/4inch stainless compression union wich do not require soldering or brazeing.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

I'm the first to admit im no builder, this tri clamp union is advertised as 3/4. does that mean thats what size pipe will fit in it.
Is it the one i need?

Most tri-clamps seem to be advertised at the od of the pipe, as to fit to a regular female copper pipe socket of that size
The next 1/4 up usually is only a mm or two bigger, easily filled by solder, try to find A listing of the dimensions by size and you will figure it out, most of the smaller ss clamps have a 2mm wall thickness

I've got some of those and have used them, their bloody fantastic. I can check their size for you tomorrow if you like. I have a feeling that 5/8" copper pipe fits snug inside the 3/4" unions not 3/4". I think 3/4 would fit over the top, I think??

Well ya can't say I'm not dedicated to the forum, I just went for a walk to the shed in what feels like -105deg frosty weather to check for ya :laughing-rolling:

5/8" (15mm outside diameter) fits inside the 3/4 triclamp union. 3/4" (19mm outside diameter) will have to be expanded to fit over the union. So the unions are 15mm inside and 19mm outside.

Hope that helps :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Get the copper expanded. Ask a plumber to do it, it would only take 5 mins. He'd probably do it for a beer :handgestures-thumbupleft:

scratching my head having a rum session, if i remove these 2 OD 19mm pieces i can slide the ferrules in and hopefully solder without stuffing the other joins

Unsolder the two tubes and go straight into the flares you already have on the elbow and the reducer? If their 3"4 that is

I was more saying use a 3/4" joiner from the ferrule to your still but removing a bit of 3/4" pipe in your series of reducers will work as well.

Just an idea, replace the 90 degree bend for 2 x 45 degree bends with the triclamp ferrules between the 2 45s.
This will allow you to have any angle you want and gives you much more flexibility.
