Just a question,

I use a 1400lt galv rainwater tank and pump.

After some 20+ odd runs reckon the water kinda smells musty to me. Tank is cleaned out every start of winter so it's spotless and has 2 x filters on the way in that are cleaned regularly.

Does water when flogged hard go off?

Do u guys treat water with anything?

very cool 8-) I have one of these back home not going to stuff around converting these pressure washers if that subbie pump will work. We had it for pumping out the soakage, what, why is everyone looking at me like that ya not going to drink the water :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: Nar its been washed pretty well :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hey bt1, I'm a bit paranoid about warmish water (though my coolant tank is only 300L), so use this stuff: http://www.davey.com.au/ApplicationandProducts/Acquasafe_Rainwater_Purifier.aspx

I figure if it's non-toxic and chlorine free, it shouldn't hurt my condenser.

I was always under the impression that the only thing that really grew in water tanks was "good" bacteria.

Only seems to make sense seeming people drink out of water tanks decades old without any health effects :think:

then again when we pump it we stir it up. Might look a bit shit and I wouldn't want to drink the floaties but still, don't reckon theres much to be worried about personally.

Again, one of these things that boils down to the level of risk you are willing to take ;-)

Ah well :-B There are some real bad bacteria that can in theory be in rain water. Do you remember a few yrs back (before those bad droughts they were forcing pubs clubs landlord ect to remove a the "killer rainwater tanks and rainwater was about on par with strychnine according to all the pimple face academics. Then the bad drought came and they re looked into it and what do you know those bad arsed bugs need to be kept at a constant 36' so can not live in any rainwater tank, hence why the government were then paying ppl to put their tanks back. So in otherwords any reasonable sized tank will not breed any dangerous bacteria :ugeek:

But if it stops that musty smell I'm ok with it...things smell wrong for a reason imho

Are you planning on drinking it, or is it just for the still?

You will get more crap grow in smaller tanks as it will get hotter and the bacteria and mould will go nuts. I had it in my 80lt tubs but every now and then just tip a cap full of bleach in and all was good lol. Any water that will sit and get warm will grow shit. Not a worry to much but I was using my brewing pump and didnt want to have that crap in there, Bleach can be pumped out with a bit of boiling water.

just the still ...I guess I've a few faves at work ...could get it tested to be sure but would rather save remaining faves for ethanol testing...it comes in handy.

is there a problem with chlorinated water running through copper pipe I'm not aware of ?

The Davy stuff is about $40 for a litre, but you use about a teaspoon per 1000L water, and it should last about 3 months.

As far as bacteria, legionella is what i was thinking of, but like I said, my tank's small so it gets up to 30-40degrees.

I'm not sure about all chlorine products, but I'd be worried about chlorine corroding the condensers.

Doing your sums that pump will use 20 c power every 2 hrs aprox
