I was reading this last night and thinking I've got the scrap copper I might give this a go while I wait for the boiler to heat up in the morning. You know what they say about the early bird an the worm. Well it 6.47 on the weekend and I'm still too late lol.
I'll still have a crack but I'll have coffee and eggs first no rush no huh I'm jus another copy cat :laughing-rolling:

Truth is I'm a lazy bastard and if I don't do it when I think of it, the excitment wanes and nothing gets done.
You know the routine... start making excuses etc.

The main reason for the wine thief over the dipper is volume.... it takes forever to pull out a bottles worth of booze. :handgestures-thumbdown:

Now it won't..... not sure if that is a good thing :think: :think:

So under 2hrs, some scrap pipe, a couple of hammers and some 2% silver solder.... wine thief finished. :D :D

That's a great wine thief DBS but I would have thought it would be much slower than the dipper as it takes a number seconds for the liquid inside to reach the same level as the liquid outside due to the small size of the holes through which the liquid and air enter and leave.

You have inspired me to have a go at making my own copper one even though I have repaired my glass one which is way too fragile and I suspect will break again the next time I so much as look at it.

The dipper takes forever to get a bottle of spirit out.
Haven't measures the whisky, rum,vodka thief yet, but I'd say two dips and I'd have a bottle.
Depending on how full the keg is..... and less mess.

Was easier to make than I thought.
I'm sure you can do better..... just take some time.... unlike what I did :D

now heres a curve-ball: why not combine the copper with the glass, that way you can see the liquid level ... ?

Just needs a few more washes to remove any unwanted bits in the tube.
Likely will hit it with the gernie just to make sure.

Did you use silver solder or (?is it?) soft solder?

2% silver solder

No need for flux or fussy cleaning of metal before soldering. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Also easier for filling small gaps.

You're probably right about the speed, I didn't take a close enough look at the size of your pipe (ooh err missus!). It will probably be much quicker.

I'm all thumbs as far as metalwork is concerned so what I end up with is anybody's guess!

I reckon a copper and glass combo would look brilliant ET but getting the glass to seal with the copper might be a touch difficult.

Anyone know where in Melbourne a chap can get a short length of 1" copper pipe? Bunnings sell 25mm capillary bits but not the pipe!

Thanks dbv, I suspected that was going to be the answer. Due to my work hours and location (working in the CBD can be great but it's not conducive to being able to pop out to anything in the suburbs) I have difficulty getting to scrap yards and such during their business hours. Might have to wait until I can take a day off.

In the mean time, I'm going to try my hand with some 20mm I have left over from a liebig I built for my boka.

For anyone who wants to make one like mine, you could use a 20mm end cap with a small hole in it in place of the reducer and copper rod that I used as copper rod is difficult o find. I just happened to have some and decided to do it the hard way.
