3 inch shotgun

Just started building a 3 inch shotgun today with 9x 1/2 inch pipes in it.

My 700mm Liebig 1 inch over 1/2 inch isn't quite cutting it with a four ring gas burner under the keg.

So I thought I'd build something that I can use on a 2 inch pot still for now and use on a hectic bubbler down the track a bit.

Was thinking of going about 450 mm in length, will this do the trick???

Cut and drilled end plates this arvo.

I reakon 450mm will do it but is there any reason you can't go longer?
Plus I like the square grid looking shotty :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A bit like the time I read the thread about a 3 inch stripper, I was thinking, I like my strippers a lot taller :laughing-rolling:

Could go longer, I could stretch to 500 with the Amount of 1/2 inch pipe I have.
The square grid is also due to how much pipe I have on hand, I know I could fit ten easy maybe squeeze eleven.

Also can anyone tell me, could I get away with using soft solder for this?
I haven't quite got the hang of hard soldering yet.

Think I already know the answer to that, but can't hurt to ask

A lot of people use soft solder only

Me, I tried, made multiple sprinklers then ordered my RC from Mac :laughing-rolling:

Thx mate, I'm now a lot less daunted by this task.
I had horrible visions of blackened copper, burnt flux and blobs of hard shit everywhere that was nearly impossible to clean up :scared-eek:

I know it won't be a walk in the park, but I think I can do it

this might help too and check out other build threads for tips.
What's this going on btw?
Oops, just read you'll make a "hectic" bubbler. :laughing-rolling:

I'm re making my 2 inch pot still right now, so it will be stuck onto that for the time being
But I can see a HECTIC monster bubbler somewhere down the track so thought I'd go a bit bigger for that.

Turns out 700 mm Liebig is just not enough for 4 ring gas burner

I'm happy though having learned a lot on my first build, I love metal working and could quite happily do this shit over and over with a smile on my face :D

450 will be fine, 500 better but remember 450 with 10 inner tubes is 4.5m of 1/2"

0.7m liebig wasnt enough, would a 4.5m liebig be enough. definitely. but go 500 :laughing-rolling:

EDIT, oh i forgot 9 inner tubes 8-}
subtract 450 or 500 from my numbers :teasing-neener:

Having built a 3in shotty I can say when stripping with 4800w only about the first 6in gets any noticeable heat and I'm looking at changing the plumbing so I can restrict the water flow.
Mine is 600mm long massive overkill but I like the look of it no science went into it length, the scrappy had 600mm so it's 600mm :text-lol:

Coffe addict, doesn't that just mean your boiler is underpowered :)) (at least for stripping runs!)

So I got the hard bit done. Finally......

Putting the guts together wasn't too hard (a bit fiddly)
The problems started when it was time to solder the guts into the 3 inch housing, too much gap between the end plates and the inside of the housing. After much swearing and some liquid stress relief got it sorted.
Ended up cutting some slivers of 3 inch pipe and cutting a small section out of the ring to make an internal collar to slide down and butt up to end plates to stop the solder running thru.
It's a bit dodgy but it doesn't leak
Just gotta get some reducers and I'm in business

Excellent stuff mate... that'll knock down anything you can throw it at!

Most of my condensers have little pieces of wire/scrap around the edge of the plate too... as long as it seals, you'll never see it anyway!

@minpac it may one day find it's way onto a bigger column/boiler but for now I'm quite happy with the production rate three runs and a 200L wash is sitting in my aging barrel... I can manage that most weeks and not upset the Mrs with lack of attention lol.

Looking good fishleg, it'll knock down anything you throw at it. I've seen less cooling on an 8in commercial rig.

Personally I find a 450mm 2" shotgun with 4x 1/2" inner tubes has plenty of cooling power, especially in ACT here where the tap water temp is generally quite cool.
You've built it, good job.

mines a little over 400mm long and 4 * 1/2" inner tubes and it can handle 4800W with a trickle of water.

yours will be great no matter how long you go.
