What makes a good gasket ?

Postby stubbydrainer » Tue Jan 31, 2012 9:59 pm

I'm just about to cut a 260 mm hole in the top of a keg (for cleaning purposes), and make a slightly conical cover for it 310mm dia with a 90 mm riser with a 4" flange on top of that, to mount the still on
The lid will overlap 25mm around its circumference, and reattached using 6 or 8 x 1/4" stainless bolts welded on place from the inside with wing nuts and washers on the outside.
But what makes a good gasket, do the "new type cork gasket" cut the mustard ? ( vulcanised cork , I think its called :? )
about 2 mm is what I was thinking
What does the brains trust reckon ??

Mac
how long would that last ? 3-4 runs or would you have to do it every run ?
I was sorta thinking about it , and thought "surely, there would be another way to seal it up without that fucking messy shit every where :angry-banghead:

Personally I wont use the shit & what I'm doing is an 8" ferrule on the top of my new boiler, then a disc to fit it with a 4" ferrule glued to that..... expensive yes, but I'll never need to do it again and I can use off the shelf gaskets

The's a good tutorial on Artisan somewhere on making gaskets with silicon.

Personally i'd cut one out of insertion rubber.

or maybe a trip to a kitchen shop :? , for a baking mat !! ( apparently :o ) I'll have to go alone, I never get out of them sorta places without a new something or other that costs big bucks :crying-yellow: :violin: when I get dragged in by the :angelic-little:

the teflon sheet thing is interesting Maheel, wonder what it is like ?, let me know when ya get a ballpark price

I bought a silicon baking today, I have some reserves with it being it is only thin ! but should be OK if it is tripled up, and it isn't big enough to got a few 300mm rings outta, but I got it with the elements in mind....square bolt pattern type.... so there's plenty for that !
I ended up getting 1 x 3600w and 1 x 2400w sickle type elements, incoloy 825,
SBB's young fulla is a sparky so together we went and got em, off the shelf at his wholesalers at a good discount , had to order the screw in type, and they were heaps dearer as well,
Now can start ripping into the 18g keg after I get a few little jobs outta the way

Hey Stubs,I got some silicon sheet from that jehbco mob a couple of months ago, very reasonably priced and good service.Talked to old mate on da phone and they have quite a wide range of thicknesses and types of silicon sheeting. He even sent me 4 30x30cm samples...can't complain about that :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Got 2 sheets 2mm thick, one solid silicon and one like a foam, but sealed on both sides and the other 2 sheets were 4mm thick and the same densities as the 2mm.
I found the low density stuff the duck nutz for the sight glasses for the 4"er I got off of Mac.you didn't have to use anywhere near as much pressure to get em to seal

yeah, I reckon the pressure to get a seal on the silicon bake mat I gat today would be fuck all, which is good coz the elements mount bolts can't be tensioned more than 15 Nm ( yet to convert to ft/lbs or in/lbs ) which would be a bee's dick off fuck all
