Storage Jar Seals

I have several 3 litre wide mouth jars that I want to use for oaking spirits and long term storage however I believe the seals on these jars are most likely rubber.
To make these jars usable I thought I would create new seals with HDPE sheet that I have found on ebay. (see link)
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDPE-Sheet- ... ect=mobile

Question: Is HDPE suitable for this purpose?

Cheers

Nope. Food grade PTFE (Teflon), silicon (without filler material) and food grade epdm are ok. Cork, stainless steel, copper, glass and timbers that have been traditionally used in aging alcohol are all good (oak is most common). Don't go trying out exotic timbers as they can be toxic. Ceramics can be good if finished properly.

I use alfoil under the lids of small jars that I store neutral in, a few layers helps to keep it strong so it doesn't tear easily and expose the rubber underneath.

Sam mentioned a good site called Widgetco that sell large size corks, might be worth a look.

Thanks db1979.
The information you have provided is very informative and I will put it to good use as I'm sure others will too.

Cheers.

I just use paper towel thats been layered up about 4 or 5 times. Makes a decent seal and let's the angels do their job too.

Just curious, but if you were to store your alcohol for 6+ months using this method, how much would the angels take?

Ok great thanks for that info.
Would these be a better option on still setup then?

Not much really the liquid level in my 3 litre jars drops by around 25mm max.
