Ok, at my local scrap merchant today, getting some 2.5” copper.( ooooohhh boy! A mountain of 3”, 4” and 6” copper pipe just laying there!). I picked up enough of this stuff( pic below) to pack my 2.5” column. SS swarf, in neat little pyramids. I first thought, spp. But now, not a clue! Cheap at $4 per kg, so i may do a comparison with scoria. Has anyone seen, used this stuff?

There is fuck all surface area compared to structured mesh or scoria etc.

Give it a go then compare it to something else :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That’s what i was thinking. I know how the scoria performs, so I’ll cut my next run ih half, and compare the two. Only spent $8, so no great loss if it fails miserably. :-D

Please consider that a cutting fluid would have likely been used on it
It also is a random grade/type of ss - it may corrode easily

I have a pile of swarf a bit more steel wool like I got a decade ago in similar circumstances, knowing what I know now, I would have grabbed the thinnest, finest strands, I'll give it a go after a good cleanup one day

Bloody sharp stuff, I recomend gloves if you go hunting it

Would a ribbon surface like that trap too much fluid and potentially cause smearing?

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll give it a good bath before using. Not looking very promising as a packing material. :-|

Coolant can be nasty stuff.
I wouldn't bother, $8, not really worth cleaning IMO.
Go and buy some quality stainless scrubbers or copper mesh and live long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

The stuff we used in our machine shop was toxic, good coolant that was easy on the skin but you don't want to drink the stuff.
