cross flow condensor

Postby bradsgonetrekkin » Wed Mar 28, 2012 5:46 am

After researching about Harrys cross flow condensor I decided to have a go at making one for my vapour management column.

Not that theres anything wrong with my 1/4 inch double reflux coil, but I had a few bits and pieces left in the offcuts bin after earlier builds so I decided to have a go. Its supposed to be a pretty efficient condensor and easy on pumps for recirculation systems as well.

The main section will be around 250mm long 50mm pipe, with 13 x 1/4 inch tubes around 220mm long to be brazed onto internal plates, then onto the inside of the condensor. Apparently a few people have had problems with accessing the end caps with earlier designs so I decided to use 50mm brass tube bushes on the ends with removable brass caps should I ever need to access the ends of the internal bits. Will also mean I can double check for leaks and redo any dodgy joints if need be. Note the internal parts of the condensor in the vapour path will be all copper, with brass only in the water cooling ends.

I haven't got the water inlets / outlets in yet, but will probably use something like a 1/2 inch brass tee brazed into the end cap. Will also add a 1/4 inch copper vent to the top of the unit.

Will keep you posted along the way.

Yep will add a bit of tube at the top somewhere for venting purposes. Dont want bombs in the shed :!:

Have'nt posted in a while so I thought I'd give a quick update on my cross flow condensor build.

Got it all hard soldered a while back by a plumber mate and after cleaning and testing did a big neutral run just before new years.

All works great, no problems knocking down 2400watts through my vm column.

I ended up setting up a basic cooling water recirculation system as well. 200 litre drum, cheap bunning water pump, an old EJ holden radiator and an old fan work well to recirculate and cool my setup, even after running for most of the day.

I got an old EJ holden radiator for $1 on ebay, added a cap and a few fittings and set up a simple cooling and recirculation system which is working well. I turned on a fan when the water started to heat up a bit and it seems to work fine. I checked the temp towards the end of a neutral run and the water from the radiator back into the drum was around 45 degrees while the top of the still head was around 78.2 degrees c. Thats with around 200 litres of water in the drum.

Done well mate, the radiators do work well.
Would you be better off using say, a hyundi or kia radiator that cost nothing, and sell the EJ one?
Those old holden parts are pulling a good penny these days.
