Milky's 4" Carter Head

Postby Milky » Wed Jun 19, 2019 3:24 pm

Hi everyone.

Been a long long time since I've distilled or built anything. Had a couple of gnarly years of moving interstate twice, working in America for half a year and 2 X Hernia operations.

So it's time to make my re-entry to this hobby on a high note by building a 4" Carter Head.

I have read a lot on here and have decided to go with what seems to be the most common design 4" offset Carter Head.

I am going to incorporate a built in wash attachment because I think it would come in handy for the future.

I have been luckily moved back to the workshop where Bender The Bubbler was birthed so I'm going to be utilising similar methods and TIG welding this one too.

This will also be mirror polished in the end to match Bender and Benders boiler.

So...Enjoy!

I wanted to have the ability to flush the system after use so in the blockhead (used a blockhead to reduce overall height) I placed a piece of 1/2" with a hole in the end which will spray into the sight glass module of the carter head and the rest of the length I placed 3mm holes to flush the packed section and plates down into the boiler.

I'm using the same flanging method as I used before except on the basket module. My method pulls the copper inwards so a basket would fit loose and vapour has a chance to bypass the Botanical basket.

So I'll be cutting copper rings from rolled out 6" copper offcuts to TIG in place as a sort of bastardised easy flange. Pics to come.

Did a test fit after welding and it all looked straight.

Then cut the sight glass hole which is 3" and cleaned it all up. Went back and welded in the flush tube and the have it all a clean up in citric acid.

Annealed and flanged the 2" and decided to give it more strength by adding a flange ring. I have manufactured the other two 2" flanges this way and made them as short as I could. They are pretty strong. Gave it a fisheye on the linishal and made the rings for flanges on the 4"

The TIG is getting a service so is out of action til early next week so that's all I've got for the time being.

I was wanting all mesh as it's easier for me to get. I am owed a few favours and I have cashed them in. Ended up with half a sheet of perf SS 304 and intend to make the basket our of that. That's next week.

In the meantime, I needed to buy a couple of 90 degree 2" copper elbows. Trying different methods and thought, why not do a branch Tee out of a small amount of 2" copper pipe I had left.

Worked out the development, cut it all in the cold saw and Tig welded it up by fusing. Then silver solder some gaps and holes I put in it. Here are some photos. I still have to solder it it place after a little bit more love shaping it on the linishal and the stake table but it's getting there. Oh, also got to do the final height cut before final solder.

So it took a little while to load pics. It kept logging me out but here are all the pics I have so far.

I just have to do a little forming and shaping of the inner piece mating area and I can solder it in place and cut the bottom to length (5/8" gap from bottom to tube)

So with the last pic, the basket module is clamped to the thumper module. And the basket when made will slide in and out nearly and utilise the pulled in upper flange of the thumper module for the basket to rest on.

This was my last week in the workshop. Now I will be pulling all my favours to get workshop time to finish, but thankfully not much to go. I only need the following;

-1 X 90 degree copper elbow, flanged both ends, 3" and 4" clamp
-Valve for bottom blanking plate
-Make my inner basket (got full sheet of perf)
-Weld a handle on the top blanking plate.

And I can polish it all at home with the dotco and air compressor in the next few weeks. So here are more pics.
