Jaycar Thermometers

Postby timboss » Fri Jul 05, 2013 4:49 pm

G'day Gents

Just doing some research on thermometers, it seems the Jaycar stem thermometer is a popular choice.

My question is, the probes are fairly long, and the I reckon half the probe would be sticking out on a 2" column.... Don't these things usually measure the temperature across the entire probe?

I'm sure these a popular choice for a reason, being that it does work accurately, but I thought I'd ask the question.

Cheers
Tim

Hey mate, they generally measure right at the tip. There's 2 dissimilar metals at the tip, at different temperatures they generate a different current. The temperature of the rest of the probe is pretty much irrelevant.

Hi Tim

Funny, I was in our local Jaycar store the otherday looking for a new thermo for my column.

They only had two types, one covered the temp range but only had 1C resolution.
The other was labled a Lab thermo and had 0.1c Resolution but I spotted on the packaging that it only measured up to 50C..

Ended up at the HBS .

Re the length .I wrap teflon tape on about half of the probe on mine an it reads fine .I have this to "fatten" it up so it will fit into the port on my Still. Also I believe that having the shaft insulated from the still wall ,it measures purely the vapour temp that it is contact with.

How do I know it reads fine ?

Well the new one I got to replace my old one which I thought had died.So yesterday ,I had them both sitting side by side ,one with teflon on half its shaft and the other not. They both read exactly the same temp .Fucking incredable because I was sure they would vary by at least 1deg

If they are the same as mine and they look to be there is one annoying thing with these , they time out every 1/2 hr or so and have to be pressed on again. Not a big deal but kinda painful if ya go to check it just as it flicks off :handgestures-thumbdown:

Now go put them in boiling water on the stove top and see if they read 100.

Then go put them in an ice bath and see if they read 0. :teasing-tease:

Why would I want to check it reads 37? Lol.

Results are good I reckon you can be confident with those units.

I probably should check mine one day.....

Just a little tit bit for the noobs,
The fact that you have 2 thermos showing 2 different temps means jack shit.
For example, If you are mounting it in a Boka, then the actual running temp while your taking off product is irrelevant.
What is more important is the change in temp. This signifies the change in fractions of your distillate. :-B
