Uses for 3/8" copper?

Sorry if this isn't the right spot for this thread, but obviously I'm not sure which other section to put it in. Feel free to move it if you so desire.

I've got HEAPS of 3/8" copper pipe, and no idea what to do with it. I'm sure there's plenty that can be done with it, I just don't know what it is...

Any suggestions? Worst case scenario I can just sell/swap it to the scrappies for useful stuff.

Cheers.

You could build a shotgun product condenser with it. I don't think a shotgun reflux condenser would be a good idea... too much restriction of flow (please correct me if I'm wrong). I built my product condenser out of 3 x 3/8 inch inside 1 inch. They just fit inside the 1 inch with enough room to make it possible but I wouldn't recommend it, it was really fiddly but it worked for my application. 3/8 inch inside 2 inch should be fine.

Whatever you do with it I would recommend that you use whatever you've got and no more as it's expensive stuff to buy. Much cheaper to go for 1/2 inch as it's about half the price. And you won't get a better price for it at the scrappies just cause it's expensive brand new, they'll buy it off you on a weight basis.

Just how much is HEAPS anyway?

I fitted 5 easily into 1 1/2" on my VM Condenser

I like 3/8. :handgestures-thumbupleft: Like db1979 said though its expensive ,so I'd be hanging onto it.

Might also make a nice condenser in a 3" or 4" VM

Didn't even think of making a shotty! Cheers.

By heaps I mean > 100m... Like I said in my intro thread, my family hasn't thrown anything out for 50 years. I've got heeeaps of 3/8", a fair bit of 3/4", and a bit of 1/2". Bugger all 1/4", and nothing bigger than 3/4", unfortunately.

You know that 3" Boka you're planning.

RC and PC done in 3/8 :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Is the stuff you got annealed ( soft and easy to bend ) or hard drawn ,straight lengths and buckles when you bend it ?

That'll use up about 10 m of it! Just gotta find a use for the other 90! :laughing-rolling:
If you've got that much, you'll probably never use it, so may as well sell what you don't use... Maybe get a better price on ebay or gumtree than at the scrappies.

Yeah even though I've never used a boka I reckon an RC with 3/8 inch would be good cause you want it to knock everything down, the smaller diameter should be beneficial.

And why boka instead of a VM?

Going for the Boka because they seem to be the easiest way to learn, and can be used as both a reflux and a pot head... I'm more interested in making whiskey than I am neutrals, but with the Bok if I fuck up a whiskey run, I can just put it back through and make a neutral.

I'll have to see what I've got (annealed vs non-annealed) and work out what I can do with it. I thought about using it for condensers before I asked, but wasn't sure if it was a good idea.

Cheers for your input guys.

G'day yummy... Not reeeally keen on getting rid of anything at the moment, I'm still yet to build my first still, which I highly doubt will be my last...

The other thing is that most/all of my copper is in short lengths... 1-2m, or less. The only decent length that I've got is being wound into my reflux condenser :)

No worries Zac. You don't ask ,you never know .

If it was me ,I'd probably say the same thing ..Anyway ...pleased you're using it and wanting to keep it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No worries mate. Just don't want to get rid of stuff that I will probably want later on... I'm only 22, there's a fair chance I'll build more than one still!

So, scrolling through some old threads for some pearls of wisdom... zac a while ago I had a brain wave of forging a copper Damascus twist column. Choose your size and find a piece of shaft, or heavy walled pipe, light a fire, heat it up and start hammering! No idea how it would work, but if it did would look the goods!
