s/s keg mods

Postby Geeps » Tue May 20, 2014 12:52 pm

G’day all,

Question without notice,

I have a 30l s/s keg that I gave to a bloke to weld a 1” s/s socket in so I can put a s/s ball valve on it to drain the contents.

Now the chap did not purge the keg ~x( when welding and around the inside of the weld looks to be rusting.

I was going to use this keg for oaking /ageing of mac rum @ 65% can I still do so?

Will the 65% kill off any nasty’s?

Cheers

Clean off the corrosion with whatever tools you have then you can "pickle" it with acetone :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Got an air compressor?
I'd grab a bead/soda blasting kit from super cheap (or make one, google for guides) and blast the area
then repassivate the area with oxalic acid

Basically the inside of the keg is filled with argon gas to expel the oxygen so when the keg is welded the weld won't be exposed to oxygen that will create oxidization. so you will have a rust free weld. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The welder will know.
Just tell him you want sanitary food grade finish. For this everything must be nitrogen purged to displace the oxygen or you'll end up with a shitty job.

How do the keep the gas in there if i have a 100 mm hole to fit the sight glass?
Is this what everyone does and where do find someone to do this?

Argon is a little bit heavy and the welder will just leave the gas running in there.
