Hi All

I've been given a couple of 30l stainless steel drums which are prefect for storing feints or multiple stripped wash's prior to a spirit run. My problem is that they have a hazardous chemical sticker on the side - Acetaldehyde. I've been told they've been internally washed, but my mate doesn't know how (the guy he got them off a just said they were washed).

I know that acetaldehyde exists in alcohol in minute quantities, however in researching how to clean acetaldehyde, all I get is hazardous spill cleanup documents and in it's pure form it looks like really nasty stuff (including being a carcinogen).

Does anyone with a chemistry background out there know much about this stuff and how I can clean the containers to ensure they are safe? The last thing I want to do is poison myself.

Acetaldehyde is very volatile, boiling point 20.2 deg C so it should evape off naturally if the container is lift open. Only issue is if there are stabilising agents added that might leave a residue. Kind of depends on what the chem was manufactured for as to what else other than the primary chem is in there.

A rinse with feints then water and detergent would be the way I'd go.

The stainless will clean up just fine.

You should consider changing the seal on the underside of your drum lids however. Do remember to order a compatible seal :handgestures-thumbupleft:
That's just me being over cautious; I got a 60L stainless drum recently and just replaced the seal for peace of mind.

Thanks guys. Done the clean and they're looking pretty good. Plenty of storage for feints and strips now.

To be on the safe side, I won't store anything that won't be distilled again.
