Ok, so I've just broken ANOTHER alcometer :angry-cussingblack:

That's two busted in two runs, I'm really not keen on dropping $15 or so on a new one every time, does anyone know of an alcometer made of a material that's both safe to use and hard to break??

I read somewhere that you should buy them four at a time.......take them home and throw two at the floor......get it over and done with  .....not much help I know.... I think if such a thing as an unbreakable alcometer existed most home brew shops would be stocking them. Buggers would charge a fortune for them though.

I generally avoid setting fire to things I don't need to :text-lol:

Fuck it, I'll just use the thermometer when its distilling and a calculator when I'm cutting and bottling it, probably not quite as accurate but at least I can't smash the bastards

How are you breaking them?

Someone posted a tip on artisan that sticking a little ball of copper packing in the bottom of your Parrot will stop the accidents from dropping them in when the parrot is empty.

Oh I can break things in a million different ways

First one I bumped and it rolled off the table, second one I wasn't paying attention to how I was holding the test tube while I was moving it, and the alcometer slid out the end and onto the floor. So basically I was enquiring whether there was an idiot-proof model available  Seems not though, I'll make do without.

Bit of late comment.
15cm length of cotton with the smallest amount of tape helps me lower and retrieve from demijohns. lol

first hydrometer eggs where used as a hydrometer to get a starting gravity if you had small artificial eggs that sunk at set values 70% , 60 % 50% 40%

I cracked the top of the alcometer the other night. Don't remember doing it but must have knocked it on something while cleaning it. Damn things are so fragile.

I'll go a bit OT here - but i like how in that show the "old stock footage" of Popcorn is still in widescreen :))

My father, brother and myself shared a still and 1 alcometer for 4 years going between our 3 houses each month or so, that was passed down from my grandparents. We've since got our own stills and gear and still never broken an alcometer between us. Fucks me how you guys do it.

After this post I garantee I will break mine within the month
