240l Wheelie bin fermenter

Postby Hardie355 » Thu Jan 15, 2015 5:57 pm

Hi All,

Well came home from work today to a brand new wheelie bin for some reason (I already have 2 and the docket had my name and address).
Anyway im thinking of using it as a fermenter for TPW to start with and was wondering if and how I should seal it up with an air lock.
Putting it on a stand with a drain tap is no drama.
I'll probably only do 200l so I can do multiple runs over a weekend and 60l fermenters around here are 80 bucks.

Thanks

No need for an airlock mate, just cover the top with gladWrap, or pallet shrink-wrap, or a garbage bag and a rubber band, etc :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I wouldn't worry about an air lock, so long as it's covered so no nasties can get in you will be ok.

Some plastic wrap over the top and just put down the lid. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks Guys,

Sounds too easy coming from brewing beer years ago!!
So how do I know when its ready? SG or stopped bubbling or just leave it for weeks? I have 2 batches of TPW down at the moment still bubbling away after near 2 weeks in 30 degree mackay heat.

You'd need 200kg sugar :scared-eek:

Let's remember guys we like to keep things at a hobby level here, the unwritten rule is a ferment of 200L is more than enough unless you're commercial :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That should yield around 40L of 40% after cuts, diluting and bottling, more than enough for the home hobby distiller to last a while :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've scaled everything back to 50L ferments and a 4" rig on a 50L boiler now I'm 2 yrs in front with my aged spirit :teasing-neener:
