Built my Parrot

Postby jeh » Sat Apr 25, 2015 2:00 pm

Hi Everyone, thought I'd upload a pic of my parrot. Knocked it up over a couple of lunch breaks at work. Reasonably pleased how it came out, although I'd go about assembling it differently next time, live and learn :laughing-rolling: Learned not to solder the beak in first before soldering the concentric reducer on, the thing fell out with too much heat, while messing around with the reducer, it slipped a bit lower than I wanted it, and no amount of heat from my gun would move it (only a butane gun, suspect I needed a Mapp gun for more heat) :angry-banghead: Persevered though, getting it how I want it, will get a nicer bit of wood for the base when finances allow - thinking Jarah, Mahogany, that sort of wood. Just need to test it out now, did a sacrificial run on my pot still a couple of weeks ago, need to get some cornflakes tomorrow, and try Zak's CFW :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Looking good their :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Question how long is your alco meter?
Why i ask is the more alcohol the parrot holds the slower it will react to % changes.
also you will get smearing of heads hearts and tails

Nice job jeh.
If the saying "The first one is the worst one" is correct.
We are in for some more really nice work.
Because that one is a really good start. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Rumdiddlydum has a point.
The smaller you can make the parrot the faster it will react to changes in the spirit going past it.
Just need keep it large enough in diameter so the flow doesn't affect the reading.

A good size is 25mm dia x 250 long.
The pipe feeding it 9.5mm approx.
That's the size I use for a 6" column and it handles it well.

Like your art, looking forward to the next make as well. :D

Thanks for the compliment DBV, still learning but I'm having fun. To answer yours and Rumdiddlyum's question I used 300mm of 1" pipe for the body as I have a standard HBS alcometer. Infeed pipe is 1/4" pipe, roughly 300mm as well. Probably will end up building another one anyway, as I'll be building another pot still soon, got spare 2" pipe left over from my build, and was thinking of a stripping 'pelican' still like SBBs.

When i built my 1st parrot it had the inlet 1/4 up the main tube :angry- banghead:
But thanks to the constructive criticism i managed to change it.
Well done mate its the sense of achivevment that makes us learn and fxxk ups along the way :laughing-rolling:

You have inspired me to build one myself! I have been wanting one for some time now and think I've got the ability to build my own. Just gotta track down the parts I need. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
