collection jars

Postby bluc » Fri May 15, 2015 8:28 pm

Wondering what people are using for collection jars. I have seen domino's jars and v drink bottles mentioned. Any affordable jars available with ml markings can I buy these without suspicion new to this(duh) and collecting info before I take the plunge..Do the jars need to be made of anything special so they don't break with hot liquid? How bout beer bottles? Use able? I Have a small 10l pot still. Cheers

As long as it's glass your fine mate, your not putting boiling liquid in it (even though most jars/bottles will withstand this anyway). :handgestures-thumbupleft:

You can use beer bottles but it makes it harder to do cuts with the small opening, ie getting your nose in for a sniff or getting a spoon in for a test.

My best suggestion would be put the word out to your family/mates for all their jars from cooking, like dolmino and pasta sauce etc. You can easily put a mark on a few to give you a rough idea how much your collecting ;-)

I personally use the V8 juice glass bottles but that is only because I stocked up on them before they stopped making them in glass :D

I know a member here that bought a case of pasta sauce for about 80 cents a bottle and tipped most of it out :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Plenty of options, just use glass not plastic ;-)

I just use 500ml Dolmio (etc) jars, and only fill them about half way (~300ml each)

As Sam said, I just asked a couple of people to save their jars and I had enough in a few weeks :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Your local red dot and cheaparse shop is the go, most sell basic glass preserving jars. You can get them around a dollar each cheaper if you are prepared to wait. From memory I got my first lot from the reject shop but since I started we introduced a keep every jar rule in the house... I won't be running short any time soon :laughing-rolling:

I found i had a stock of jars building up before i made cuts. First i had 20 large moccona jars :scared-eek: which was over kill but did the job well. now i probably gain 2 jars a week just from use at home :handgestures-thumbupleft:
I wouldn't imagine a 10L boiler would need many jars. if you pull an ABV of 80% then 10 jars will be more than enough that easily hold 150mls per cut :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:text-+1: for The Reject Shop. They have 3L storing jars for $3 as shown in picture below. i use some myself for aging :handgestures-thumbupleft:

i collect in 200ml jars until i get close to my heads and hearts border than i make them 150ml. once i know im in hearts for sure i collect in 1L jars and then as i near hearts and tails border i head back to 150ml jars and then 200ml jars.

I should mention the jars hold a fair bit more than this, i just put this amount in them.

i figure who wants 7 jars for 1L of hearts if you know its hearts for sure. If you do 25L of low wines then that's a lot of jars 8-} I only know my borders from many runs through my still. everyone runs their stills differently making these borders different for everyone.

After a few runs with cuts you will be able to sense when you are near your hearts and then into your tails :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Passata (type of tomato sauce) jars bought from Woolworths are good, the have a wide enough opening for oak dominoes and a good sealing top. After every pasta dish you have another bottle. :D
For larger, hassle your local theatre group for their discarded sherry flagons. These are 2 litre with a wide enough opening to take a narrow oak domino and seal well too.

I use some cool glass mason jars for $2 ea I got
from wollies. They have similar at the cheap shops.
They have oz and cup markings on the side.
I just like the cool old school look of them.
Personally I'd only ever use glass.

I did use stubbie bottles at first but found it harder
To nose my cuts with the small opening. So I switched to using every
drinking glass in the house for the wider opening and found making cuts easier
Instantly. It certainly improved my product while learning.
Im sure that's an individual thing. We all make cuts differently.
I have a freind and fellow distiller who prefers stubbies.

:text-+1: I also like a wider opening, also allows more evaporation with a larger surface area evaporating more lower alcohols over the 24 or 48 hr period (i air for 48 hours) :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Got my collection jars today or should I say glasses. i thought about mason preserving jars but they are a pita to pour out of without splilling and lids are not needed for cuts either(from what I have read most people use coffee filter on top overnight then blend and move to permanent storage.) So I bought some octagonal whiskey type glasses I figure the shape will help me pour without spillage (have a corner to pour from)also nice and wide at the base and bit of weight in bottom as well to make it nice stable. Got them from big w $10 per 6 glasses not cheap but happy with my purchase :handgestures-thumbupleft:
