Cooling with swimming pool water?

Postby Professor Green » Fri Jun 12, 2015 8:58 pm

Just curious as I have a pool right next to my shed:

Is it folly to pump water from a swimming pool to use for cooling a still?
Would it damage a stainless steel condenser?
What if the water was green since it had not be chlorinated for years lest I kill the colony of frogs that have taken it over?

Cheers,

you will need to rinse it after to prevent the chlorine damaging the steel

I do use this method, I drop a submersible pump into the pool and just rinse with tap water for a minute or so after the run.

Works well especially at this time of year when the pool is sitting at 10 degrees.

I have done a similar thing except without pool water. I used a wheelie bin of water to hold cooling water for my still. It didn't have enough volume to maintain a constant temp the entire run. So I used to add ice bricks and/or use a forced flow air radiator. Both worked quite well. The water was treated with chlorine so it wouldn't start growing things when it was warm.

As previously mentioned you will need to rinse the still with clean water at the end of the run and it should be fine.
