Seems a little low AL... If you times the recipe by 6 to get 150L you should end up with a bit more low wines than that.. By stripping run I will assume you mean spirit run and you can expect to yield about a third of what you started with... Depends on your cuts, abv output of the still of course

Dont be greedy :violence-smack:

There's a very good reason we keep our wash ABV's low ;-)

So it's still working, just not as hard?
Yes, that's completely normal
A very fast hard ferment isn't always a good thing

Ok, so a little off topic, but I figure I'll ask here...

I finished my 2nd ever run last night - a 6kg sugar/28ltr tpw. (I accidentally put in 90g of Lowans red though). I fractionated the collection, and ended up cutting 600ml of heads and 450ml of tails, after covering the jars and leaving them for a day. the run came in at 1.8ltrs @87% after the cuts. :? Oh, I racked the wash and used a clearing agent (24 hr klar).

I decided to drop it to 40%, and after doing that, I gave myself a shot to taste the goods. The smell was clean, but the taste was STRONG. It really tasted like it was 60%! (It wasn't - I triple checked.) :wtf:

It didnt smell/taste fuel-like (?) Like the turbo i did last run, but i was hoping to not have to filter; ive ended up putting it thru the carbon to see if that helps it at all... have I not done something right? The amount seems very low and the strength is definitely lower than the turbo (92%).

Or, am I just expecting to much?

Thanks guys

To my limited knowledge, the lowans bakers yeast will only allow you to make a wash up to 10% as this yeast dies off at this point. For a bigger yield you will need to use perhaps ec1118 as it can cope with a much higher alcohol content. With the strong taste you need to let it breathe for a week or so. I do this by puting a tissue over the top of the demijohn and hold it on with an elastic band. I then swirl it about a couple of times a day. Some people use a fishtank type of bubble airator stone with an air pump but they get a lot of evaporation. Im getting great results. Lots to learn and you find it all in theses pages. Happy reading atreau....

Thanks Geko;

I've ordered the ec-1118, and just waiting for delivery!

I'll let it breathe like you've recommend - it makes sense now that you've said it. Thank you.

Your right about so much to learn - it's enough to make your head spin!

Ran my tpw that has been ready for three weeks this afternoon and i took 150ml forshots, 200ml heads then 2 litres of hearts before the onset of tails of which i only collected a touch over 300ml normally i only collect 1.8 litres max before tails and i get .5 of a litre or more of tails.
Just wondering why today is different

Try letting your jars air for 24 hours before you make your cuts :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I don't think so mate, mine sits overnight after a run so it doesn't kill the grass when i tip it out. As long as you don't let it sit for days on end you should be ok.
My old man lets his turbo washes sit for weeks before he empties his boiler and wonders why his element is fucked. Yes I have tried to convert him but he is so stuck in his ways, e.g. he doesn't like this new metric system that they have brought in.

Sweet, Well its full ready for the morning
First batch of tpw for me :) fermented to 990 60L of the stuff.

Been doing turbo for around 6 years but very excited to try this tomorrow also because of the new modifications to my still thanks to you guys :) added copper to replace those bad pvcvinyl joins! Ohh and dual elements for faster warm up

I'll let yall know the results :techie-typing:

Alright all cooked up and finished..

I got 6.8L of usable 40% by the time I made cuts and watered down this sound about right?

This is out of a 50L tpw 10kg sugar... seem a little low, but all the same for the best parts it smells a lot better than turbo.

I was collecting around 92% a little lower collection that what I get from turbo's too

I kept collecting for a little while longer and I've put the feints along with 5L of 40% old turbo spirit and 5L of some spirit I made in my pot still that was gross in to my boiler now (along with a lot of water) I'll see if I can clean that up and then carbon filter it or some thing
