Wondering if I add 10l water so it's 30l batch and add half as much grain again so 6kg corn 3 malt barley and 1.5 rye will it still be "this recipe" or should I stick to 20l batchs. Just thinking I can do it in two mashs instead of 3...

did it not convert starch to sugar? im a noob to AG 8-}

If so would it be worth bringing up to temp and adding in some extra enzyme so it doesnt waste the grains? or just best to start again?

In my case I would say I didnt do my cereal mash right(which is cooking corn oats etc till all starch is released) I already added the grain to a fermenter with some sugar for a sugarhead so I cant do anything besides dumping my all grain section part of the mash( I was going to do my mash remove the grain then make a sugarhead with the spent grain). Tasting it there really is not enough flavour in my opinion to bother doing anything with.

My mash was real thick like porridge when I added the malt then after 2 hours it was real thin so I thought it had worked oh well live and learn. Going to get an esky and use brendans method before using anymore grain..

Yea t500 boiler. Found with this amount of grain biab to messy hard to handle. I think mashing in an esky will make sparging (washing the sugar from the grain) much easier. Look at 50ish litrer esky not sure on prices will have to go check out what bunnings has..

Have done the rice and corn and when you cook is evil stuff i think part of the problem is getting acurate temperature when its thick used 20 L stock pot and no bag and stirred vigourously and temperature was different depending where you put the probe the hot plate small only heated slowly started out by pouring boiling water into the stock pot to start cooking the corn .Cooking corn what is more important time or temperature
The t500 boiler could be harder to get correct temperature of the cooked grain to add the malt at correct temperature difference of top and bottom of boiler .
Iadded a cupfull of malt at 72 deg to liquidfy and let drop to add more malt.

I should have thought of that most likely was to hot for enzymes in the malt. Thanks wynum I should have realised my temp wouldn't be accurate in such a thick mash. 4kg corn in 21l water it was so thick I was worried it would be to dry to mix the malt through, which is why I couldn't work out why I didn't get the starch conversion. Thanks again will try that on my next attempt. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just wondering, if you over shoot temps and mix in the malt like you said earlier and then the viscosity changed so you thought the conversion took place, what if you add a packed of enzymes after adding the malt in a case where temp may have overshot, once it isnt as thick would the temp be more accurate and if enzymes are denatured can you add a packet of enzymes to finish the job off? Would be an extra cost but would it work as a way to save a failed mash conversion? All good info for when i start to do this myself but thats a ways down the road now

When i did the cooked rice with a cupfull of ground malt grain at 72 c it went liquid very quickly i think a cupfull is only 200 grams .That was 2 kg rice in 20 l pot not the 4 kg corn .
Could the t500 boiler be used as a double boiler put a stock pot hanging in it and not have grain near the element .
Have a 10 L aldi stock pot that will hang in 30 L boiler but would have to do in batches
