Wellsy wrote:I don’t have airstill mate so can comment specifically but it seems you might be trying to combine methods of collecting a certain amount along with stripping/spirit runs.
If you ar e doing a stripping run you fill the still and keep running it until you have all the alcohol out of the wash. Or at least until the abv is around 15% or so. What you get is called low wines you then combine them you will need to make sure the abv is at or below 40% and that run is a spirit run.
Seems you are stopping a stripping run after a certain level is collected if I am reading your message correctly. That may be what is adding to your confusion.
What is left in the still after you stop collecting is essentially water and will only dilute your wash if you add it to the still without emptying it
Hope that helps

Well i did 3 x 4 litre stripping runs using the Airstill flow chart collection method (1350mls) , just until i get this figured out .
First was 30 % , then 2 and 3 were 36% , my new plastic test tube seems a bit grippy , if you know what i mean so maybe that's why the first run measured 30% .
So i now have at least 4 litres of undiluted alcohol for a spirits run ,
My WBAB wash was 9% ABV .
I have only just found out about parrots to measure ABV so i will get one before i do a spirits run or an other stripping run .
Just need to find some time before i do it .
Cheers,
Bucket .

Hi Bucket
I have an airstill and a parrot and recently did a weetbix run. I found that for every 4 lt stripping run if I ran it till 20% on the parrot I got about 850 mls per run. I then combined all 4 stripping runs and did the spirit run which I ran till around 65% ABV making cuts along the way. What was left I chucked in some oak chips for about a week then reduced down to 40% and it is drinking nicely. I am very new to this and I find the airstill is very easy and also predictable in time to heat up and run and what it produces. I today did a spirit run on a 2nd generation mash of cornflake whisky with the 3rd gen bubbling away nicely on the bench. It really is an addictive hobby.

If I can make a suggestion for the air still guy's OK it a small still now with multiple runs while doing a generation of wash's so one can get 5 litres @ 65% for aging. Depending on yield 4 to 6 generations may be needed by that time the older generations will that that more funk to the end product. Back when I was learning and only had a 2" potstill I did CFW and after year on oak it was a very nice drop.

Now the thing about this hobby is hurry up and wait :laughing-rolling: as the hard part is making the stuff then the pain of waiting goes away as more is made :handgestures-thumbupleft: So give it a go just pick a CFW or WBAB or what ever wash and learn to do generations as this will go along way in learning this hobby :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers Bryan

When you say "What was left you chucked in some oak chips" , what do you mean ?
Do you mean just the hearts or did you combine some tails as well ?

Yes sorry Bucket, the hearts and some tails which had some nice flavours, then diluted it down to about 65% ABV and added the oak chips.

So basically all up 5 hours run time start to finish on doing a grain mash, now doing a 45 litre 40% run would be close to an allday run but eh the yield would be over 20 litres of 90%+ :laughing-rolling:

I haven't done my spirits run yet , i ordered a proofing parrot from Andrew so i will wait until i get that .
I am still trying to get my head around generations for the WBAB wash .
wooduck wrote this in another thread .

On generations, leave yeast bed where it is, put a few ltrs of water on top of it just to keep the yeast happy while you distill then put your sugar and a bit of fresh wheetbix etc in a bucket and dissolve it with the hot backset out of the boiler once the run is finished. Top up the fermenter with cold water to the amount you think you'll need minus the amount in the bucket that the backset and sugar is in. Tip the backset in and she should be good to go.(You put hot stuff in last so you don't kill the yeast) Getting the temp right can be a bit tricky but doing it that way seems to work for me.

Can i put some backset in cold ?
I have a 5 litre bottle i can store some in .
As i probably won't be ready to do another wash at the same time i am distilling .
Do i need to use the same amount of Weetbix and Allbran again ? (3 cups of each)
Is the juice of 1 Lemon and Epsom salts needed again ?
I guess what i am trying to say is could i put the cold backset and water in , then add the sugar that has been dissolved in hot water plus whatever else is need last .
Cheers,
Bucket .

Bucket

From what I’ve read to date, the idea of using hot backseat is to save you from heating water to dissolve your sugar.

So adding the cold backseat would be to add flavour, as you will need to then use hot water to dissolve your sugar.

But I’m still new too. Hopefully I’m on the right track.

I think you need less for generations - and how much is probably up to you. My guess is slightly less than half

Need to test for PH to answer that question.
