Hi guys,
This is my first time doing anything more complex than a sugar wash so I just wanted to make sure that I'm doing it right. is it just a case of dissolving the sugar in hot water then mixing in the crushed malt and liquid extract, no boiling of the grains or anything? I'm not sure what "grain bed" means.

Also, does anyone have a rough idea of how long this usually takes to ferment?

All in mate, no boiling etc needed.

What still are you planning on running it through?

Cheers! looks pretty straight forward in that case

So finally got around to putting a batch of this on after borrowing Rumdiddlyum grain mill the other day, thanks mate.
Smells amazing with the caramalt :happy-partydance:
Turns out I bought the tin so long ago it was about to reach its best before date 8-}
Some could say I took an AGRAJAG to do it :laughing-rolling:
(Agrajag: noun:
1. a unit of time defined only by how long it should not have taken.
2. "An inordinately long time" - Bushy

Well it's never going to catch on if Zak doesn't read it :angry-banghead:
Put another 50L of this on today.
I re read the entire thread again and there seems to be some argument over how to run this on a bubbler.
Can those that have had success with this share a bit of thier run strategy?
Ie 4 plates or 3
Run hard and take off at 80 odd % or run slow and aim for azeo?
Keen to get this one right for my tastes without too many of my usual "trail and errors".
Cheers

I put one of these down two days ago in hopes that my new bubbler will be complete by the weekend (so close). I changed up the process a bit because i am used to mashing all grain beer anyway. I did a 30 min Sach rest with the malt barley @ 66C. it will bring up a little extra sugar but it doesn't really mater. I just love mashing grains haha. I will only have 3 plates to run this though so i will deffinately report back my findings. Although i am inexperienced in tasting notes. ill just tell ya if i like it off the still and at 1 month on oak. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

We've run this once on four plates and held it at 95% until we hit tails. Being new, we aren't necessarily a 'Yard Stick' but you can add our experience to others and perhaps we'll add weight to the scales..
hearts were very clean and on Oak it was nice, certainly smelled good BUT we lost quite a bit of flavour!!

We're about to do an AG for whisky and will repeat the same recipe BUT use only 3 plates. Just want more flavour and experience to put on oak!!! While I love our bubbler, it makes a clean drink, but I want MORE flavour!

Love my Whisky! Love it neat! Love, not like!

To those who don't know what Agrajag is; http://hitchhikers.wikia.com/wiki/Agrajag

As for macwhiskey, the only one I've done I run through the pot and fucked the cuts up and went too tailsy... I ran it all back through with some CFW, called it a Zakwhiskey and it was bloody delicious :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Run once over 4 plates, was fantastic. Big flavours from the little I had left after 6 months on oak. The father in law (who is a fan of good whisky) has requested more so that's a win in my books. I'm sure you've read the whole thread & seen the small changes I made (dark liquid malt & dark roasted barley) so not sure if this is why I have great flavour or not. From memory ABV held at 92% & dropped with the onset of tails. Single run over 4 plates.

95% Ezi, were you running a packed section? Maybe achieving that high an ABV stripped the flavour from it?

Yer, 1kg copper mesh over the plates... but, it wasn't that far off when we ran it without the copper, if my memory serves me corr correctly... plan on using the packed section (minus packing) under the plates as a spacer... and hope that that will give us more flavour. So I feel you've come to the same conclusion as us.

If you've run a whiskey through 4 plates a bs a kg of copper mesh, and taken it off at 95%, you're not going to have much flavour left to play with...

What's the theory behind the spacer underneath the plates?

Ima greedy-guts and fill the boiler too full which causes puking .. :D

The spacer idea came from Mauritsio, saving me some money (I was about to buy a new spacer) and he told me to use the packed section (minus the packing) as the spacer...
