1.5 runs on uj or other sourmash

Anyone using the 1.5 idea on a sourmash? And if so, how is it?

Do you mean stripping one wash and tossing it in the boiler with the next?

I've read that with a uj or generational wash, that when you get into the good flavoured sour mashes, that you can strip wash 1 and put it in with wash 2 for a spirit run getting some nice flavour. Just wondered if anyone has experience with this method and some age? I'm doing it anyway as a test with a few litres of lows

I think you'll find that this is common practice... Most of the recipes and their discussions use this procedure, or its being used by those that like this particular method - they report finding great flavour coming off the still...

Just never heard of it being called
1.5 runs

It's relatively common practice with bubblers, I prefer a true spirit run with a pot though (compared to 1.5 run with a pot)

1.5 run.. interesting wondering if this would give a similar product to a run through a pot with a thumper..

That's what I read it was compared to bluc. Thanks everyone. Ill give it a try with some gen 4 lows in half my gen 5 wash

Thanks Zak I guess it would work well carrying flavour with a bubbler rather then just a single pass?

Well you probably won't carry as much flavour as you would with a single pass through 4 plates... it's a matter of efficiency.

Hey ozzy thought this info might be useful i cant comment on product quality because i did a second spirit run with this run

Approx 2.5l feints from 25l low wine run with 25l fresh mc rum wash.

After 3l collected abv still 67.4. Abv (at parrot)

3/4 5l demijohn bottle collected no puke

4l collected. abv 62.1abv (at parrot)

4.75l collected abv dropping fairly steadily ..
57.7%abv (at parrot)
temp still below puke point of 92 ish degrees

Bottle switched 57.4 abv% (at parrot)
First bottle abv 70% abv( in bottle.)

First sign of puking 91.9 degrees second bottle.
Abv 53.3% at parrot

Second bottle 1/3rd full abv 43.9%abv at parrot 94.1degrees.
Second bottle Aprox half full. 39.7abv at parrot 94.9degrees.

Power off 20%

Hope there is some useful info fact i collected a bottle above 70% tells me it may be decent like this with cuts done..

Btw a normal strip for mcrum for me would be start approx 55-60% abv rapidly drop to 50-55%abv then steadily drop to 20%.

Spirit run. Starts 83-85% drops to 78-80% rapidly, were it very slowly drops to 65% then fairly rapidly drops to 55% where i stop..

That's awesome information bluc! Looks like a nice big healthy chunk of hearts in the middle there! Full bottle from just 25l is brilliant!

do you mean heads and tails from a spirit run? When I strip my uj or mod cfw I just pull it out fast after fores down to 30%.

Full bottle at 70% is everything no cuts (except foreshots)

I ferment 7 25l lots at once in a big drum.
One lot is sacrificed as lees /sludge. Which leaves 6 lots 25l.

I then strip 5 lots of 25l wash approx 5l low wines from each, i say 5l but never measured it its actually a bit less, gives me 25l low wines.
I then do my spirit run and cuts. I keep the feints(heads tails) from doing the cuts.

I then mix batch 6 wash and feints and strip it.

Then do a small spirit run with batch 6 low wines and the feints. About 7litres.

From that i get enough to make 2.5l at 65% that i put in with the stuff i keep from first 5 batchs to boost volume.

The last bit 500-700mls at 78% goes on oak for a 33 o.p rum :D

That's an awesome run strategy I think I'm going to take up the same thing. What sorta fermenter is it that's so big? You using an ss drum?

Get a 200L pickle drum for big ferments :handgestures-thumbupleft:

When I was using a pot, I would;

Strip 4-5 washes/generations into a keg until almost full of 40%
Spirit run on the low wines + the tails from my last similar spirit run

Store spirit run heads in a keg to run through a reflux for neutral
Hearts into my belly :happy-partydance:
Tails straight back into the low wines keg

Repeat!

Except for rum, I stored all of my rum feints separately and made all feints rum every 2 or 3 spirit runs.

So when you finished collecting jars from spirit run and your making cuts, tails go into the low wine stash (future wash low wine stash) and heads are kept seperate to run as neutral?
What sort of yield do you expect from a spirit run almost 50l? I have 2gens of mod cfw stripped for 16l ish low wines already (only got 25l boiler ATM)

What sort of yield? A tasty one.

I stopped worrying about the numbers very very early on in this hobby.

Wondering if you do a 1.5 run through a pot with a thumper, would that be same a two run pot run? Would low wines go in thumper or in boiler then wash in the thumper? Guessing fuller flavour if the wash was in thumper rather than the low wines.. talking small inline thumper..
