Glycerine to add body to Vodka

Postby Otago Elvis » Sat May 05, 2018 9:47 am

Hi all, I'm wondering if adding glycerine to my neutral would help to add body/mouthfeel?

I've heard of it being used in Liqueurs to help thicken the product, but would that hold true in a spirit?

My neutral is clean and I'm happy with it's taste, or lack of, but I just can't quite grab that body the big boys are able to achieve. I was curious if anyone has travelled this path before? And if so, did you have any success?

Cheers

I tried many moons ago with a Polish bloke who was a vodka fan.
It just tasted 'wrong', for want of a better word, to him.
By all means try but only do really small quantities to try or you might have to redistill some.
He was a fan of my vodka after it had been put into a bottle with some of my residual bourbon I had forgotten to wash out first though. Go figure.

Ok, thanks mate

Your answer goes along with my line of thought. I am concerned that introducing something to a neutral product would more than likely affect the neutrality, for want of a better word, of the Vodka.

Glycerine is a laxative that could be another problem if you add .

What wash are you using for your Neutral? I found TPW, whilst making an excellent neutral, was a lilttle thin on mouthfeel. I use a wheat bran wash for neutral now and it makes an outstanding vodka with good mouthfeel.

Alternatively, you can get an vodka essence from your local HBS... :laughing-rolling:

I flit between TPW and Kale, dependant on availability of the Kale. I have considered trying a cereal wash, but couldn't see how they would be any different from what I'm already doing, given that the wash would be stripped first then put through a reflux still. Surely the end result would be a neutral? Devoid of taste and substance. Regardless of which wash is used.
However, I will certainly give it a try.

Placing coin in the coffers of the local HBS is not a habit of mine

Thankyou for your input.

It depends how neutral your neutral is and where you do your cuts I suppose but I definitely prefer the mouthfeel of Bran/WBAB over TPW. I know Doc has mentioned before that he prefers a TPW base for his gin as he found neutral from other washes was detrimental to the final results. Many absinthe manufacturers use a grape based neutral as they claim the mouthfeel from that is superior to anything else. There' got to be something in it.
