Just stripping my 5th....that will be the last one. Mix all the gens for low wines and run through pot still slowly is my game plan.

Just a quick question which I cannot find in this thread... do we put the grain bed in the boiler? I have got prob 20% of the boiler now, because this is what came with the wash. I'm planning to add 30% back to this grain bed and start gen 2. Hopefully I'm on the right track!

... I think I've answered my own question.... we don't put the grain in the boiler :laughing-rolling:

I was looking at the glass and it was getting a little bit cloudy... few minutes later I couldn't see through the glass. I've got the flu so couldn't smell anything but yeah we burned the grain. So I guess I'll discard all of this and use the grain bed I have left in the fermenter?

Yeah you don't want any solids in your boiler unless your using a steam jacket or baine marie style.

Yep ditch what you have and have fun cleaning the element or bottom of your boiler :teasing-tease:

Grain in fermenter will be fine if your doing generations :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi. I am going to try the NutriGrain Whiskey recipe from the tried and proven site . 2 box 800g nutrigrain 5kg raw sugar 25 litre of water. It does not say how much Lowans Yeast.
Anyone got a ball park figure I am thinking about 65 grams based on TPW ratio's. Tks.
And hey just a thought I have got some frozen backset from an allgrain run, could I add that to the 1st generation or would it make the yeast struggle.

If you have a ph meter add the backset to suit ph would not go lower than 4.5. All grain backset would give a sugarhead a good lift flavour wise :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use 80grams lowans in a 180l sugar wash seems to ferment strong..

Righto thanks for that. Yes I have a decent PH meter which I use for brewing.
Might go a bit lower with lowans than.

Hi guys. I currently have 2 x 25L first gen washes fermenting, for each wash I used 2 x 805g nutrigrain (milled in blender) and 5kg of raw sugar. I also couldn't find a definite answer on how much Lowans yeast to use so I put 80g in each. It has been fermenting strong, started off at an sg of 1.072 and after 4 days it is now down to 0.986 and still active as hell...
Q's:
When do i call the end point? Do i just leave it until the activity stops?
Have I used too much yeast?

It will be getting close to done... but when you get the same gravity reading two days running she is done. You cant always rely on a airlock to tell you.
The amount of yeast you used was alright.

Thanks Dan. I will keep checking until i get same sg for a couple days in a row.

I am not using an airlock this time round, just some cling wrap over the top so i can see what is happening

Also double check how you are reading your hydro, never seen a wash go below 0.990 ;-)

Using cling wrap you will see when the wrap drops and bubbling on top will stop then it will start to settle out when it’s done :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yes i thought this strange also, will take a couple photos tonight to show what I am seeing.
Last night the cling wrap was still a dome shape (hadn't dropped) with plenty of bubbling still happening on the surface

I have attached photos, this one of the hydrometer in the wash and it sinks down to about the top of the white line;
Hydrometer in wash.jpg

another photo shows the hydrometer scale which i am reading the top of the white line to be less than 0.990 (the longer line in the blue shaded area is 0.990?)

Last one of the fermenter with the clip wrap still dome-ing
