bacon..

Postby fizzydrink » Thu Mar 28, 2013 5:38 pm

im not 100% sure with latest craze of everything having something to do with bacon, but anyway, i read on a forum at work, someone infused bacon into a whiskey??
apparently tasted ok, with the smokyness of the bacon adding quite a nice flavour..

thoughts? (apart from "shit")

There is a restaurant in America that has infused lots of food flavours in to vodka, they are famous for cheeseburger vodka.

Also do a bacon and maple vodka that is meant to be pretty nice.

I would use Barossa Valley double smoked organic bacon for extra flavour.

my sisters firends made bacon vodka.

luckily one of the works in a labratory so he had access to very very high grade micron filters. they soaked the bacon in the vodka for days, then ran it through the micron filters. did 4 or so times, with new filters each time. then just to be on the safe side they froze it, and there was still a layer of fat that they scrapped off :puke-huge: :puke-huge: :puke-huge: . then ran it through micron filters a few more times.
the whole process took a very long time

the end product was described to me as "tasted like bacon with a bad vodka after taste"

I'm with you crow, although it would be a justification for having vodka with your eggs in the morning.

If you wanted smoked or bacon flavors I wonder about trying smoked malt or bacon in a gin basket.

You could fry your egg there too...

Depends how volatile the bacon flavour compounds are, but that could be a good idea to prevent the fat getting through (provided the bacon is in the upward vapour path).

Personally id be trying smoked malt first, Iv had some beers that have a great ham/bacon flavor which is all from smoked malt.

That's an interesting idea actually Hill, I've been keen on getting an Islay style scotch going and considering the stupid cost of peated malt that may be a cheap way to get a peated flavour.

It'll take a bit of mucking around with to work out quantities, but I like your thinking.

Not sure if if would work on a scotch, I was thinking it would work more in a vodka subtly.

What are you paying for your peated malt blond?
